Shelly's Shares: Preparing Your Body for the Next 30 Years, Not Just the Next 30 Days
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Want better health results fast? That urge makes sense, but it can trap us in short-term thinking that never turns into lasting change. This conversation is a reset for anyone who’s tired of chasing “overnight” wellness and ready to build a body that holds up for decades.
We talk about preparing for the next 30 years, not just the next 30 days, and how to make daily choices that support longevity. Shelly breaks down why strength training and muscle mass matter so much for healthy aging, including how strength supports metabolism, blood sugar, balance, and bone health, which can reduce the risk of serious injury later in life. You’ll also hear a simple way to think about your energy like an investment, with practical “deposits” you can make through sleep, movement, nourishing nutrition, stress management, and recovery.
We go deeper on the compounding power of small habits: daily walks, steady hydration, prioritizing protein, and getting morning sunlight. Shelly also touches on prevention and the importance of lowering risk over time, plus the reality that longevity is not just about adding years to life, it’s about protecting quality of life, independence, joy, and vitality.

Short-Term Thinking Vs Longevity
SPEAKER_00Society encourages us to think short term, or we want to have success in our health journey and our weight loss journey and our workout routine. We want success to happen like overnight, right? Like yesterday, last week, last month, last year. And we need to shift that short-term thinking to more of a long-term wellness, more into longevity. What can I do today that's going to serve me today and well into the future? Do you get confused by all of the information that barbards us every day on ways to improve our overall health and our overall wellness? Do you often feel stuck, unmotivated, or struggle to reach your wellness goals? Do you have questions as to what exercises you should be doing? What foods you should or should not be eating? How to improve your overall emotional and mental well-being?
Welcome To Words Of Wellness
SPEAKER_00Hello everyone, I am so excited to welcome you to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly Jeffries, and I will be your host. My goal is to answer these questions and so much more. To share tips, education, and inspiration around all of the components of wellness through solo and guest episodes. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you. To bring in guests who can share their journeys so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness, and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today.
Preparing For The Next 30 Years
SPEAKER_00Hi my friends. Welcome back to Words of Wellness. This is our Shelly's Shares episode. And today I want to dive in and talk about a very important topic, and one that is more important at this phase of my life, and probably your phase of life as well. And it has to do with our health, our bodies, preparing our bodies for the next 30 years, not just the next 30 days. Now, with that being said, the wellness company that I am partnered with, Isogenics, we have an incredible 30-day system that I encourage anyone to try if you are looking to get healthier, perhaps release a little bit of weight and just make a difference in your overall wellness routine and your longevity. And it's a great way to kickstart. I will never recommend something for someone to do just for 30 days and then stop. So we do have a 30-day system. And I did start with that when I started with this program over 12 years ago. But what I am sharing today is much more than that. What are we doing? What choices are we making today that help us feel good today and next month, but also 10, 20, 30 years from now? Because I think it's not as important and it's not as relevant, right? When we're younger, we don't always think about that. We don't think about the choices that we make in our 20s and our 30s, how those choices are going to affect us in our 40s, 50s, 60s. So this is a really important topic, and I wanted to touch upon it because so much of the time society encourages us to think short term, or we want to have success in our health journey and our weight loss journey in our workout routine. We want success to happen like overnight, right? Like yesterday, last week, last month, last year. And we need to shift that short-term thinking to more of a long-term wellness, more into longevity. What can I do today that's going to serve me today and well into the future? So as we are building our strength, our energy, our resilience, our longevity, what are we doing today that will support us 10, 20, 30 years from now? And I really want to pose this question because I really want to encourage all of you to really think about it. You know, our bodies are we're not meant to like fix necessarily our bodies. Maybe there's some things that need a little bit of work, but our bodies are ours forever, right? It's our body is our lifelong home. So I want you to really think about the long term. What can you do now that's going to benefit you also in the long
Strength Training For Healthy Aging
SPEAKER_00term? And, you know, I've talked about strength and having muscle mass and doing strength training. Obviously, I, you know, I've shared that before. And I shouldn't say obviously, but that's a very important predictor of our future health. It is one of the most important things we can do as we age to actually slow down the aging process, but also to protect us, to help us be healthy as we age, to give us strength. So if, God forbid we ever fall, we we don't get injured. You know, when someone is older, and if they don't have a degree of muscle strength, muscle mass, and and their bones are fragile, when they fall, they have a much higher risk, of course, of having a serious injury, as opposed to someone who is strong, who has muscle mass, whose strength trains. As you strength train, it also strengthens your bones. So if there was ever a risk in life later on of fall happening, there's less of a chance of a serious injury happening. Now, the muscle also supports our metabolism, our blood sugar, our balance, being able to balance. And at a class that I'm teaching right now, every week, we work on balancing along with strength training movements. The balance is really important. And, you know, this is something I say, especially for moms out there, you know, we want to be strong for our children, but we also want to be healthy and strong in the future for our grandkids. And we want to set the example for future generations. And that is just so, so huge to be able to be independent, to be able to play with our grandkids someday. And some of you are grandparents and you're doing that now. And that's wonderful. And that's something we want to carry, carry on into the future.
Protect Your Energy Like An Investment
SPEAKER_00So another key point is protect your energy like it's an investment. What we do now, we are investing into our bodies, into future. We want to really focus on taking time to get proper sleep, focus on getting regular exercise and movement, consuming nutrition, nourishing our bodies in very positive ways, managing our stress, and also giving our time, our bodies time to recover after we do work out. And so think about it. You know, I I hear this and you've probably heard it as well. You think about your body as a as a bank account, but maybe call it as a health account. Are you making regular deposits into your health account so that you will have a surplus later on? Another point is that those daily habits matter more than you know. And I share this so often that just starting one, two, three daily habits that you can get in the routine of doing that will serve you and your overall wellness and longevity, they add up over time. They really matter. Those daily habits matter more than you know. And again, not meant to be perfection in any way, but the small things that we do consistently create the biggest transformation. So, some examples, taking a daily walk, the strength training, drinking water regularly every day throughout the day, prioritizing your protein, making sure you're getting plenty of grams of protein. We've talked about that before. Getting some morning sunlight. That's a suggestion that I give everyone. And it's something that I do each morning when the sun is out. I step out, or I do most mornings. I do step out with my coffee. We have a little bench out back next to our jacuzzi, and I'll sit on that bench for a couple minutes first thing in the morning. And then also a really important topic is are you managing toxins in your life and the toxic load that you're being exposed to? Now, that is a whole other episode, and I've I've spoken about that topic and I've done a couple episodes on toxins, and I know I will be doing an episode again in the future, but being aware of what you're being exposed to, some of the different toxins, and how can you reduce your exposure is really, really important.
Prevention And Quality Of Life
SPEAKER_00Another key point is prevention, prevention, prevention, prevention. I talk about this a lot and I've talked about this for many years is take steps now to hopefully prevent you from being sick later on. Chronic disease does not happen overnight. Loss of muscle does not happen overnight. Loss of mobility does not happen overnight. So, what can you do today to prevent any health issues, any health struggles that you don't want to have in the future? And I've shared about this a lot because I saw my mom and my dad both have different illnesses and diseases, and they each lost their battles with those diseases. And, you know, watching them suffer in in and then ultimately losing their battle, it it was just even more confirmation for me to share and to do what I can in my power for my personal health, but also to share with others. Take steps now to reduce the chances of getting sick later. Again, it's never a 100% guarantee, but anything we can do that's in our power now, do it. Prevention is key. And then another key point quality of life matters just as much as length of life. And that's what longevity is all about. And I emphasize this also, and I talk about it on my podcast. You've heard me talk about it if you've been around for a while. And I also talk about it. Part of the reason I started my podcast is to talk about that quality of life. That's what I've wanted to, and I continue to share on this is ways we can be our healthiest and have that quality of life and feel our best and have energy and vitality now and into the future. It's not just wanting to live until we're 80, 90, 100. It's living with energy and joy and vitality. And that is so key. Longevity isn't just about adding years to our lives, but it's adding quality of years and quality of life. So I just really want to emphasize that so much. Yes, I want to live a long, long life, but I want it to be a healthy, vibrant one. I hope you would all agree. I'm sure you would all agree. That's how we want to be living our lives. And so that means we need to take steps today so that we can live healthy, energetic lives into the future.
Self-Care For Moms And Future You
SPEAKER_00And one key point that I talk about, and I've shared this before, and this really is for all my moms out there, is just a reminder to stop putting yourself, your self-care, and your wellness on the sidelines or on the back burner. Again, I share that is a big reason why I originally created my moms who flourish community is to empower moms to put their wellness and their self-care as a priority so that they can live healthy, happy, vibrant, joyful lives now and into the future. So I want to remind you that self-care is not selfish, and it's one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, but give your family because when moms thrive and flourish, our families flourish. And that is what it's all about, my friends. So I want you to think about this, imagine yourself 30 years from now. And what would that future version of yourself thank you for starting today? What would that future version of yourself look back and say, thank you for strength training, thank you for taking walks, thank you for prioritizing your sleep, thank you for nourishing your body, thank you for spending time outdoors. All the small choices that we make today, my friends, become the foundation of a healthier future. So, with that being said, take time on this day for yourself and your wellness and keep in mind yes, we all want to feel great today when we want to feel comfortable and confident in our bodies, and we want to feel good and look good, but not just for the next 30 days, but for the next 30 years. So, with that, my friends, have a beautiful, blessed rest of your week, and we will see you next time on Words of Wellness.
