Shelly's Shares: Align Your Schedule, Protect Your Time and Preserve Your Wellness
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your time is not just a productivity tool. It is a wellness tool, and if your calendar is packed with misaligned commitments, it can quietly drain your energy, patience, and joy.
Today Shelly is building on a recent conversation about time management and time strategy with a deeper focus on energy management and real-life health habits. She shares a personal moment where travel planning pulled her into the future for days, leaving her feeling off routine and not fully present. That small wake-up call turns into a bigger question: where are you spending your time, and is it actually supporting your physical health, mental well-being, and emotional wellness right now?
We walk through a simple filter for decisions that instantly clarifies the yeses and the nos: does this move me closer to my goals, or does it take from my health and vitality? From there, Shelly offers practical steps you can use immediately, like scheduling your health first in your planner, defining daily non-negotiables, protecting rest, and choosing consistency over perfection. She also gives special encouragement to moms who feel guilty prioritizing self-care, because taking care of yourself is one of the best gifts you can give your family.
If you want more support, Shelly shares how to join Moms Who Flourish and how to reach out about her one-on-one wellness and longevity coaching. Big Wellness Questions
SPEAKER_00Where are we spending our time? And if you are saying yes to certain events or commitments that don't feel in alignment with where you are at right now in your life, then I think it's important to rethink that and perhaps say no. Do you get confused by all of the information that bombards us every day on ways to improve our overall health and our overall wellness? Hello everyone, I am so excited to welcome you to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly Jeffries, and I will be your host. My goal is to answer these questions and so much more. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you. To bring in guests who can share their journeys so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness, and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today. Hello, my friends. Welcome back to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly and I am your host, and I want to welcome you here today. Thank you for being here. Happy Monday. This is our Shelly's Shares episode. And I am going to piggyback today on the episode that I had last week and put out with CW Hawley that was all about time management and time strategy. And I think that one of the really important points that she made was the fact that we're really not taught how to manage our time, how to manage our schedules. And we're also really not taught how to manage our energy, our health, our lives. I feel like we just we kind of learn on the fly. Does anybody else feel like that? As we're going through life, we are learning. And that's a part of it too, right? We can't really be taught certain things. We have to really experience them. And that's how we learn and we grow. But I noticed something about myself just recently. We have, and I talked about this already on last week's episode about travel that's going on in our lives. And as we're in that season of life right now, and I found myself for a couple of days feeling a little bit out of sorts. I was feeling like I kept thinking about the upcoming weekend. I kept thinking about the weekend after that. And I stopped myself finally after about two or three days and realized, Shelly, you're not being present. You're thinking about future. And I know that I'm I'm doing that because I have to do some planning and I have some things I have to figure out travel-wise. And it does require some planning and some thinking ahead, but I was doing it almost just to the point of I wasn't, I realized I just wasn't being present. I was thinking too much in the future, and it just was causing me to be a little bit out of my normal routine and a little bit out of sorts. And so I thought, you know, this is the perfect time to continue this discussion about our time, our time management, how are we protecting our time, and also what are we doing to be in the present moment with the time that we have right here and now? And you know, I think that it's important to talk about having the permission to say no to certain events. I feel like through the years, I've really kind of been in tune and in touch with my schedule and what works and what doesn't, and where I want to spend my time and where I don't want to spend my time. And quite frankly, I do really treasure my time home and my evenings at home, even though I will go to events on occasion, network events and uh fundraising events on occasion. But I think it's important to kind of take an overview of what we're how we're spending our time. Where are we spending our time? And if you are saying yes to certain events or commitments that don't feel in alignment with where you are at right now in your life, then I think it's important to rethink that and perhaps say no. If it's something that doesn't feel quite right, or you're feeling maybe overcommitted, or you're feeling like I just really need to take a little time home, or I need to take a step back, whatever it is for you, I want to encourage you to kind of really take a step back and think about it because this has been kind of a topic that I've I've shared and I shared with CW Holly in our last week's episode about the schedules and how we can kind of get caught up in the busyness of life. And it's important to really take a step back and think about what are you saying yes to? Is it in alignment with what you want to do and how you want to spend your time? And what's what's the cost to you if you are continuing to go to the event or continuing to keep a schedule that maybe isn't aligned in alignment with really your goals and where you want to be with your your life at the current moment. And sometimes it can cost us our health, our energy, our patience, our joy. And you know, I've experienced that off and on through the years where I'll I'll catch myself and go, okay, I don't, I don't feel that I want to commit to this particular event. I want to take some time, I need a little bit of a rest, or I need some downtime and I'm going to stay home. It comes back to something that we've talked about quite often on the podcast, listening to our bodies and being in tune with what we are needing. And I understand there are some things that we are committed to and we can't get out of them, or it is something we have to do for work or something we have to do for our family. Completely understand that. But I think it's important to kind of think about what do we want to do? How can we protect our energy? How can we make sure we're getting enough rest? Because that is essential. And think about how, again, are you spending your time? Is it is that is where you're committing yourself? Is it getting you, is it fulfilling you? Isn't and is it moving you in the direction you're wanting to go at this time and place in your life? And I think that it's important to think that if your schedule doesn't support your health, and we're talking physically, mentally, emotionally, then maybe it's not the best uh way to you for you to spend your time. So I thought I think you really, I think it's important for us all to think about this. And I think it's also important to realize that time management isn't just about being productive, it's also about protecting ourselves and our health and our wellness and our longevity. So I think if we move from a point of that, it actually helps us to make decisions a little bit easier, I believe. If we can come from that standpoint, okay, is this moving me in the direction that I want to go? Is this moving me closer to my goals? Is this going to add to my health, my energy, and my life, or is it going to take away from it? And honestly, sometimes these are hard questions to ask ourselves, but I think that they are very, very important. And I want to encourage you also to schedule your health first when it comes to your time. If you have to put it in your calendar, write in your calendar, your nutrition, your movement, your exercise, your rest, your quiet time, your meditation, your prayer time, whatever it is. If you need to put it in writing in your planner, in your scheduler, then do so. Schedule that first. And then next, what are your non-negotiables? Have those and know that you're going to follow those on a daily basis. Getting enough water, drinking enough water, making sure you're consuming enough protein. Are you taking that quiet time, that downtime that is really so important to have in our day-to-day lives? And then I think another important point is to learn to say no without feeling guilty. And I have to say, I feel pretty proud of myself in this department because I feel like I've been pretty good about that. Now, I definitely enjoy fun and being a part of events and going to events. And if I can do it, and if it works with my schedule and works with my energy, then I'm going to do it. It's not so much about the fear of missing out, it's the it's the enjoying life, right? The having fun and going to events, or if I'm going to learn something new that's going to help me in my career or my my profession, or if I'm going to meet new people and it's going to be a really social experience. These are all things that I personally like, I enjoy and and I do include those in my in my life. But again, if there's something that doesn't quite fit, I don't really have a problem with saying no. And I want to give you the permission, if you have a problem, to to say no without feeling guilty. And I and I say this and I say this with all the love, especially to my moms out there listening, because I think it's hardest for us to say no, especially if it's something that involves our kids. And then that's a whole other podcast and a whole other topic in itself. I want us to focus on ourselves right now. So learning to say no without guilt. Also trying to avoid overfilling our days. And I read something recently, and I think I shared this on the podcast last week, that we hear the common phrase, oh my goodness, if I just had five more hours in my day, or if we just had, you know, 10 more hours in the day. Well, if we did have that, guess what we would do? We would fill up those hours, right? We don't have to have something scheduled every moment of every day. And I might be saying something that sounds really, really simple, but I think it bears repeating, and it's a great reminder to all of us. And then I share this all of the time. Focus on consistency, your small daily habits, focus on consistency, progress, not perfection. All of the things that I share, it's never ever about being perfect. It's about sharing ways that we can live more fulfilling, healthy, and lives full of vitality and joy. And that's that's what it's all about. So I I hope that these points really um can be reminders to all of you. And again, just a reminder, especially for my moms out there, and a big reason again why I created moms who flourish is to give us that time that we need to put ourselves as a priority to take care of our wellness, our health, and our self-care. And again, taking care of yourself is not taking away from your family. It's one of the greatest gifts that you can give them. Because when you are healthy and you are happy and you are full of vitality and joy, then you just pass that on to your family. And when you fill your cup first, then you can fill the cups of others. So again, I just want you to kind of really take a moment and think about are you overcommitted? Is there something that perhaps you can take out of your schedule or say no to? Is there something that maybe perhaps you can remove from your schedule? And then also, what is one habit that you can prioritize this week for your health? And again, this all is tied into our time management because taking time for ourselves, taking time for our health, needs to be factored in. And yes, it takes time, but I want to encourage you to take the time now, make it a priority now, because God forbid, down the future, down the road, something happens where you get sick or you have an illness, and you don't want that to happen. You want to take the steps now to take care of yourself and your health so that you are here and healthy for your family and your loved ones. So I think it's really important to think that we don't need more hours in our day, right? We just need to be intentional with the hours that we have. And believe me, I am not perfect at this in any way, shape, or form. It's it's a journey, it's a constant learning process of what works and what doesn't. Or maybe I spent a little too much time on this and I need to focus a little more time on that. It's a it's an ongoing journey. And I think that that also alleviates the pressure from all of us to think that we have it all figured out because we we don't and we can't. We can be proactive with all of this and take the action steps, and then also still learn along the way. Learning and growth is is just a constant part of a part of life. So again, we don't need more hours in our day, but we need to be intentional with the ones that we have, and your health, your energy, and your life is worth protecting always. So I hope you find value in this, my friends. Please feel free to share this episode with someone who could benefit. I would love for you to join our Moms Who Flourish community. A beautiful, blessed rest every week and take time for your wellness. And again, I just used the word time, didn't I? It does take time and it doesn't always have to take a lot of time, but it is one of those non-negotiables that we really, really want to put at the forefront so that we can feel our best, be our best, and live our best lives and our health. So until next time, have a wonderful week, and we'll see you next time on Words and Wellness. Thank you so much for tuning into today's episode.
