Shelly's Shares: Travel Wellness Made Simple
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Ever notice how travel can drain your energy before the fun even starts? We’re flipping that script with a simple, portable routine that keeps you steady through airports, time zones, and packed schedules—so you feel good enough to actually enjoy the reason you left home.
Shelly draws on 35+ years in health and wellness to share three non‑negotiables that hold up anywhere: quiet time to protect your nervous system, smart nutrition you can pack and trust, and daily movement that fits into real life. You’ll hear how she navigates a high‑travel baseball season with her family, the mindset shifts that make healthy choices easier on the road, and why small, repeatable actions beat all‑or‑nothing plans. Expect practical details: what to pack, how to build a breakfast you can make in a hotel room, the role of electrolytes after flights, and micro‑workouts that counter hours in a seat. We also talk about immunity, stress, and how these habits reduce your chances of getting sidelined by bugs and burnout.
Sleep gets honest treatment too. Travel will disrupt it, but simple anchors—light exposure, wind‑down cues, hydration, and gentle movement—help you land better in a new time zone. The throughline is freedom: keep a steady baseline so you can say yes to dinners, detours, and big memories without the fog and fatigue. If you’ve struggled to stay consistent away from home, this conversation gives you a clear, forgiving plan and the encouragement to make it yours.
If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a friend who’s on the go, and leave a quick review so more travelers can find these tools. Have questions or want coaching support? Reach out on Instagram at wellness with Shelly J or at Moms Who Flourish—we’d love to help you thrive on the road.

With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life, and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today. Hello, my friends. Welcome back to Words of Wellness. This is our Shelly Shares episode. And thank you to everyone who is here and listening, and for all of you who have supported me and been listening to these episodes, all meant to help us all in our journey when it comes to our overall wellness and longevity. Because my goal is to share information with all of you and to bring on guests who can share with all of you information that will help you live your best life, feel your best, and live a life full of vitality and a quality of life. And I really have said this for so long. It's about living and feeling our best, not just living until we're 80, 90, or even maybe 100 years old, which will be fabulous if it is done in a way where we're feeling our best and we're living a life full of vitality, energy, and joy. And that's always the goal. So I'm gonna dive right in real quickly with everyone. I want to piggyback a little bit on what I shared with you last week on the episode of Shelly's Shares. I talked a little bit about living a full, a busy life, being in a hurry and the importance of taking downtime and taking time to be present. And what I wanted to share in this season of life that I'm in personally right now, it is baseball season for me. And so some of you know that my son, our youngest son, Braden, plays baseball for college for Michigan, and our older son, Cody, did as well. We are in the thick of it right now, which means there's been a lot of uh travel, and there's going to be more of that in the next few weeks. And I wanted to share something that's really important when I travel and when I go away from home. And I want to emphasize this with all of you because I think it's important to have non-negotiables when it comes to our overall wellness and what we're doing for ourselves, what we're doing for our overall health and our energy. And I shared on a live social media post a couple weeks ago, I think it was, just the importance of having these non-negotiables. And I want to share them with you. And I know I've talked about travel before and just kind of keeping our health in check when we go away and when we travel. And believe me, I understand it's a lot of times it's for vacation reasons, right? And we want to enjoy ourselves. And I want to just encourage you to do certain things, keep habits going on, even when you go away and you travel, because it just helps with your energy, it helps with your immune system, and it just helps you to feel your best. And with that being said, it doesn't mean we can't still enjoy ourselves. I am such the proponent of enjoying yourself. Life is meant to be enjoyed. However, if we take care of our health, we take care of our energy, we protect our nervous system, and we we stay energized and healthy in a strong immune system, then you can enjoy those moments even more so. So here are three non-negotiables. One is taking some down times, taking quiet time. Even when I go away, my friends, I make a point to have some quiet time. And we were recently staying with some really great friends of ours, and they have a beautiful backyard with a beautiful view. And in the morning, even though everyone might still be inside the house, I make a point to take my coffee and go outside and sit outside and enjoy just the peaceful morning, the quiet time. Also, I make a point to have just some quiet time, and it doesn't have to be a long or lengthy amount of time, but it's so important to have that just peace and quiet and downtime and whatever that looks like for you. I mean, I know I take my morning routine very seriously, and I have my morning routine at home, and sure it's gonna look a little bit differently when I travel and when I'm away from home, but I still take quiet time, I still make a point to have that downtime, quiet time, Bible time, prayer time, whatever it looks like for you. I want to just encourage you to still take that time, even when you're away from home. So that's non-negotiable. Number one, downtime, quiet time. Number two is nutrition. How are you fueling your body? Every time I go away and I travel, one of the first things I pack is my nutrition, which also includes my coffee. Now, I need to explain something. Yes, I love my coffee, and there is a coffee that I have had and that we drink, and we've been drinking it for years, that's from our the wellness company that I'm partnered with, and it's an organic, very clean coffee. And honestly, I take it everywhere, and it's so good, and it's low in in acid, so it's it's it's easy on the tummy and it just tastes amazing, and I take it everywhere I go. So that I kind of have under my umbrella of nutrition, even though it's not necessarily fueling my body, but I do pack that when I'm packing my nutrition. I pack up all my supplements, I pack up our shakes, so our meal replacement shakes, my protein shakes, and I also have uh bars that I bring with us and also some healthy snacks. Now, I pack all of that anytime I travel. It makes it so great, whether we're traveling by car or by plane, because then I have snacks and I am my go-to, so I don't have to spend money like on the road or at the airport. And then also having our meal replacement shakes, our protein shakes with us when we are staying at friends or we're staying at the hotel, it just keeps us on track with our nutrition. And also it's our breakfast, so it makes it really easy. So, whatever that looks like for you, whatever your routine is when it comes to your nutrition, your supplements, and if you need help with that, if you don't have a routine as of yet, feel free to message me and I'm happy to share more specifics as to what we do and to help maybe guide you with some suggestions and some ideas. But I'm telling you, it makes all the difference in the world because, you know, especially as you travel, it it's gonna disrupt, you know, your your maybe your hydration. That's something else I do bring as well, is my hydrate drinks, my electrolytes. And having all of that packed just helps it helps you stay on track, even though it's not gonna be exactly like your home routine, but it still helps keep you on track with your nutrition and fueling your body. And then you can still, of course, enjoy yourself. You know, you go out to dinner, you you whatever it is that you're gonna do when you're away from home, but it just at the very minimum having that routine that you can continue with when you are away from home really helps. So that's my non-negotiable number two is keeping my nutrition and my supplements, my electrolytes, my hydrate, my coffee all with me and part of my daily routine. The third non-negotiable is getting some movement, getting exercise. Again, it doesn't matter where we are, we will at the very minimum go for a walk, you know, get out and move our bodies. If there is a gym where we're staying, we will go to the gym and work out. And when I say we, I'm talking about my husband and myself. I will usually go for a run, but like I said, at the very least, walking is amazing exercise, and we will always walk. So when I am packing to go away and to travel, I will always, always pack my workout gear. And it it again, it could look different each day what I'm doing, but I make a point to do something or move my body and do some exercise. So those, my friends, are my three non-negotiables. And I know I've talked about this um over the over the years and in the past, but I just want to encourage you that whatever you do on a regular basis for your health, your wellness, your longevity at home, try and just continue that even when you go away and go out of town. I can't, I can't encourage you enough to do that because it just makes such a difference. Because again, when we travel, I mean, we're, you know, it can take its toll, right? We're either in the car for a long period of time or maybe we're at an airport and then we're in an airplane. So it's just we're out of our routine and that can kind of disrupt our system a little bit. So whatever you can do to keep your health in check while you're away makes such a difference. And it it keeps us healthy, right? We we're less less prone to to getting sick or getting any of the bugs that are floating around, the germs that are floating around wherever we might be, whether it's in a car, in an airplane, in a hotel, whatever it is. And that's another reason why I can't emphasize enough to keep these non-negotiables going, even when you travel. The last thing I will say, it it does help definitely with stress too, because it's stressful to travel. So you want to even more so take care of your, you know, your nervous system, take care of your health. And by doing these things, having quiet time, getting exercise, and fueling your body, that also helps with managing our overall stress. And traveling can be stressful, right? So keep all of these in mind next time you are planning a trip. And I will finish up by saying one last thing I will say, it is actually another non-negotiable, is sleep. Now, when you travel, the sleep gets disrupted. I mean, it's just the way it is, especially if you're in different time zones. I know I've talked about this before, and it's still important to strive to get you know seven to eight hours of sleep if you can. And sleep is really, really another important component of our overall wellness and longevity. So I want to say do the best that you can with that. And I know for me personally, I know I'll be traveling and be in I we were in different time zones last week. Um towards the end of the month, I'll be in, you know, a different time zone again. So you just you do your best with that when it comes to your sleep and your sleep schedule. And you know, it does get disrupted a little bit, and there's no, there's really no avoiding that. But again, when you're taking care of those other three non-negotiables that I shared, it it makes all the difference in the world. So again, number one, take some downtime, take some quiet time for yourself. Number two is keep that movement going, get that exercise going. Whatever that looks like for you, get some movement with your body when you are traveling and when you're away from home. And then number three is the nutrition. It just helps because again, when you're away from home, we're what are we doing? We're eating out, we're going to restaurants, we're maybe catching some food on the go. So if you can at least, by the very minimum, keep your your nutrition, your supplements going, whatever that looks like for you, it makes such a difference. So again, I hope you find this valuable. I just wanted to hop in as I'm in again the thick of the the baseball season and lots of travel. And I just know personally, for me, for my husband, for us, it just makes such a difference because we keep these non-negotiables going even when we travel and even when we're away from home. So I want to encourage you all to do the same. And again, please, if you have questions about what I do specifically, or if you have questions about your routine and and if you need some guidance and some support, or you have any questions whatsoever, don't hesitate to reach out. Again, the best place to reach out to me would be on Instagram at wellness with Shelly J or at Moms Who Flourish. And I'm always here to to guide you, to mentor you. And if you need any sort of coaching, I'm here for that as well. And we can discuss options for you, what that looks like, whether it's group coaching with my moms who flourish or one-on-one personal mentorship and coaching with me. I can guide you along your wellness journey and help you with your longevity. And we can figure out a plan and what that looks like to help serve you the best that I can. So, with that being said, everyone, take some time for yourself and your wellness on this day and have a beautiful, blessed rest of your week. And we'll see you next time on Words and Wellness.
