Ever notice how a single hour with a friend can do more for your mood than an entire day of scrolling? We dig into the real engine of wellness—human connection—and why face-to-face time still beats any feed, app, or clever bot. As trust frays and AI speeds ahead, we share grounded ways to protect what matters most: eye contact, shared laughs, and the steady rhythm of showing up for each other.

We start by sharing grim statistics about the lack of trust among individuals. The need for human interaction and community cannot be overstated.  As the technology world continues to evolve and grow at rapid speed, it is even more critical that we prioritize in-person, heart-to-heart experiences.  Rather than panic about technology, we frame AI as a helpful assistant and draw a line around what it can’t replace: the warmth of a handshake, the energy of a room, and the clarity that comes from a heart-to-heart talk.

You’ll hear stories from live events that left us recharged, plus concrete steps for rebuilding real-life connection without adding stress. The anchor is simple and doable: one in-person touchpoint each week—coffee, a walk, a class, a meetup—that strengthens accountability and lifts motivation. We explore how these small rituals enrich our lives sharpen and restore joy to the wellness journey. If you’ve been craving less noise and more meaning, this conversation is your nudge to choose people over pixels and bring back the basics that make life feel full.

If this resonated, tap follow, share it with a friend you’ll meet IRL this week, and leave a quick review to help others find Words of Wellness. Your voice helps this community grow.

SPEAKER_00:

It's the connection. It's the physically being able to hug people. It's being able to see people, look them in the eye when you're talking to them. It's that interaction is what we need more of this day, more than ever. Because we lost it. We lost it for a short time. Do you get confused by all of the information that bombards us every day on ways to improve our overall health and our overall wellness? Do you often feel stuck, unmotivated, or struggle to reach your wellness goals? Do you have questions as to what exercises you should be doing, what foods you should or shouldn't be eating, how to improve your overall emotional and mental well-being? Hello everyone, I am so excited to welcome you to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly Jeffries, and I will be your host. My goal is to answer these questions and so much more. To share tips, education, and inspiration around all of the components of wellness through solo and best episodes. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you. To bring in guests who can share their journeys so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness, and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life, and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today. And well, when I say my company, it's not my company, it's the part the company that I've been partnered with for many years. And I wanted to share a few thoughts regarding community. I speak about this, and I have been a full supporter of community, community events for as long as I can remember. And there were a few statistics given during our event over the weekend regarding AI and some of the concerns with it. Now, when I say that, I know that there are many benefits to using using I AI, and it's here to stay. It's here to stay, right? It's it's moving very, very quickly, and it is something that I believe we all need to learn about and understand and and use it if we are in business and use it in our in our work. But when it comes to human interaction, this is this is what I want to talk about for a minute. When it comes to being in person, being at events, meeting with someone for coffee, going for a walk, just having that human interaction, we really need to be so intentional about that nowadays. And it is confirmed with me every time I either put on an event or I attend an event, the value of being around people. And, you know, I I can speak for the for the event that I was at this past weekend, lots of very positive energy, lots of great people, lots of great energy. And you know, you leave something, you leave an event like that feeling inspired and energetic. And I really truly hope that you all have the opportunity to attend events like that, you know, every once in a while, just to inspire you, to learn, to grow, and most importantly, to be around other people who are like-minded and have that same kind of energy and uh same kind of like-mindedness that you might have. And I really wanted to share a couple statistics that were shared with us over the weekend. And I don't take credit for this, this was for part of the presentation. But we, and I say we as a society right now are having a very difficult time with trust. And if you think about what's gone on through the years, the experiences that we have had, and I think it all really probably probably started before the world shut down, but it's really escalated since the country was shut down years ago. And there's been so much noise in the world, so much information, and it just gets louder and louder and louder, and we don't know what to believe, who to believe. So it it makes sense that the majority of society has a trust issue with people at this point in time, and that is really hard to hear. And I, for someone like myself, who's very trustworthy, and I expect those that I'm I'm interacting with to be trusting people as well. It's really hard to hear that, and to hear the fact and the statistics that two-thirds of the country right now are not very trusting of other people, of the information that they're getting. And, you know, in a lot of ways, I it makes sense. It makes sense with everything that we've gone through these last few years. But it's also another reason for us to have heart-to-heart interactions, to have heart-to-heart conversations, to be able to surround ourselves with people that we know, like, and trust, and that we enjoy being around, and that we can feel confident that it's a trusting relationship in a trusting situation. Because it's it's not it's not good right now, my friends. And that's why I wanted to hop in and just share briefly with you all the statistics that two-thirds of the country is not very trusting at this point in time. Another really alarming statistic is that a third of the population would rather date an AI, a robot, versus a real person. Now, you're gonna go, Shelly, that's wild. What does that even mean? And to be honest with you, I don't know what it truly means. I just know that those statistics were shared with us over the weekend from very reliable sources. And what it tells me again is the importance for human interaction. Young people are, you know, on their phones a lot, right? And they're getting involved in chat GBT and AI. And again, that's there are very important places for using chat GBT and AI. However, for some people, it's it's taking over their lives. And I just feel like I wanted to stress the importance of being intentional about relationships, being intentional with taking time to spend with others in person, taking time to maybe pick up the phone and make a phone call. And believe me, I'm not as good about that. I'm I will text, I will voice text. I'm not as good about picking up the phone and making a phone call out of the blue. And if we think about it, for those of us who have been around for a bit, that's what we used to do, right? Back in the day when we did not have cell phones. What did we do? We just picked up the phone and made a phone call. So I just, I'm just really, it's on my mind, and I just wanted to drop a short episode today to encourage you all to take time and really really think on this. Think about how often you're getting together with with friends, with family. How often are you in rooms with other like-minded people in person, not just on Zoom, but actually in person. Because I know with my entire being that when you are in person, there is nothing that can replace that. I have now put on three in-person events for my moms who flourish community, and it's the connection, it's the physically being able to hug people, it's being able to see people, look them in the eye when you're talking to them. It's that interaction is what we need more of this day, more than ever. Because we lost it. We lost it for a short time, and we've gotten a lot of it back, but in that time frame, in these last four, five, six years, as we came out of COVID, AI has taken off. So it's almost like we're in competition with that technology. I mean, everywhere you go, or at least where I have been lately, and this past weekend, I saw a lot of the, I don't know what they are called, the the cars that are are nobody's driving them and they're driving down the streets. Like I'm seeing those a lot more now. And I think we just have to really, really wake up to the fact that it is up to us to put forth that effort. It is up to us to initiate. Hey, let's go grab a cup of coffee, let's go for a walk, uh let's let's meet up, grab a glass of wine, whatever it is. I know for me personally, and I'm sure you all can agree, anytime I connect with someone, or I I just had a meetup last week. I met with a friend and we went walking, and it's always so energizing. It's always so energizing. And you know what? It's also such a great way to just share ideas, to to uh converse about what's going on. And there's there's really there's really no substitute. And if you have the opportunity to go to a community event, I encourage you to go. And I don't know what they are all like, honestly. I just know the ones that I go to are are very inspirational, educational, motivational. The speakers are phenomenal, and then the people that are in the room are phenomenal. So I hope that you have the opportunity to attend events like that as well. And if you don't, feel free to reach out to me. I can give you a couple great recommendations of events that I highly recommend. And that's just my main message today, my friends, is to uh to let's uh let's make a pact to put forth the the intention to get together with people in person, heart to heart, heart connections, and being in community as much as we possibly can. Because this is this is something that we have to protect now before it's gone forever. And if you could have been in the room and heard some more of the statistics and what was shared, it's it is alarming, but we can take action and we can make a difference, and we can put forth that effort to be in community and to have human contact and human connection. So I know I'm going to put forth the effort, and I want to encourage you all to do the same. It's it's I'm going to challenge myself to at least one coffee date and or a walking date per week moving forward. Because let's face it too, time marches on, and you just can't put a price on having that human contact and conversation and just human to human contact. So I hope you find value in this today. I hope you take time for yourself and your wellness on this day. Reach out to a friend, reach out to a loved one, and let's continue and increase our time together in person as much as we possibly can. We need we need the the human contact more than ever. I believe more than ever. Let's come back to the basics. Let's make some phone calls, pick up the phone, meet someone for a walk, meet someone for a jog, meet someone at the park. Thank you all for listening. Thank you for your support of my podcast. It means more than you know. And until next time, have a beautiful, blessed rest of your week, everyone.
