Shelly's Shares: Holiday Health Habits That Stick

Feeling stretched by parties, travel, and longer to-do lists? We dive into a simple plan to protect your energy and joy through the holidays by focusing on three anchors you can actually keep: steady sleep, balanced nutrition, and realistic movement. With warmth and practical detail, we map out how to turn noisy advice into a few daily promises that hold up when life gets busy.

We start with the sleep foundation—why seven to nine hours matters more right now, during these holiday months, not just for your body's repair but also to help keep stress levels at bay.  Then we move into nutrition you can repeat anywhere: stressing the importance of consuming high quality nutrition and getting a balance of macronutrients on a daily basis. From there, we share how to keep workouts short but consistent,  to preserve strength training,  and walk for stress relief.

Throughout the conversation, we keep the mindset gentle and growth-oriented. Instead of chasing perfection, we lean on micro-commitments you can honor most days, plus a helpful reframe—shift from “why is this happening to me?” to “what can I learn from this?” You’ll leave with a compact toolkit to boost immunity, stabilize mood, and keep momentum through the season so you can show up with energy for the people and traditions you love.

If you’re a mom seeking community and accountability, listen for details on our Moms Who Flourish mentorship launching in January, with limited spots and special Black Friday bonuses. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs a steady plan, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find Words of Wellness.

It's that time of year where we can maybe kind of slip up a little bit in these different areas and our regular healthy habits, but it's that time of year where it's important more than ever, right, to stay consistent with those healthy habits. And I want to encourage you to do so. Do you get confused by all of the information that bombards us every day on ways to improve our overall health and our overall wellness? Do you often feel stuck, unmotivated, or struggle to reach your wellness goals? Do you have questions as to what exercises you should be doing, what foods you should or shouldn't be eating, how to improve your overall emotional and mental well-being? Hello everyone, I am so excited to welcome you to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly Jeffries, and I will be your host. My goal is to answer these questions and so much more. To share tips, education, and inspiration around all of the components of wellness through solo and guest episodes. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you. To bring in guests who can share their journeys so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness, and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life, and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today. And if you are tuning in for the first time, welcome. I am thrilled to have you here. And for any of you who have been listening and following my podcast, I want to say thank you. I appreciate you so very much. I cannot believe that soon I will be coming up on two years, two years that I've been doing my podcast. And I just really enjoy it so much. And I hope that you all are as well and can just feel the passion that I have to share information with all of you to for to help all of my listeners so that you can live your healthiest best life now and into the future. And today my episode is going to be again mostly focused on our mamas out there, but I want to talk about a couple areas because we are almost full blown into the holiday season. And I really want to share some tips and share some habits and perhaps a little mindset shift that can help us all feel our best as we enter into this season and beyond. You know, we want to take care of ourselves now so that we feel great and we're healthy throughout the holiday season and into the beginning of the new year. And I always say, let's let's not just survive, let's thrive, let's flourish and thrive. And so I want to talk a little bit about that today. Just a few habits to really think about. And some of you might have these locked in, and that's wonderful. I just want to remind everyone some areas to really, really be intentional about, even more so during the holiday season, because let's face it, it the time goes so quickly, we tend to be a bit more overwhelmed than normal. We tend to have more on our plate than normal, which then can lead to a little more stress than normal. And I want to just share a few things, a few habits, just reminders for all of us to keep these in place even as we go through this upcoming what can be potentially a very, very busy season. And you know, there's a lot of different reasons why we can become overwhelmed in this season, reasons why we might feel stressed. And for for many, it can be definitely a financial stressor going into the holidays and the different events that we might be attending, and then purchasing presents for family and friends, and and that's a whole other topic and episode, I think, that you know we could go into. But for now, I really want to talk about those habits that we can get into that don't cost us anything for the most part, right? That we can be intentional about as we head into this holiday season. And one of those is to be very intentional about our sleep. So going back to what I just was mentioning, you know, we might have more, you know, seasonal parties to go to and events to attend, and that can change our schedules a little bit. And sure, you want to be able to take advantage of these events and have fun and go and enjoy yourself for sure. But for the most part, for the majority of the time, I want to encourage you to still be very intentional about your sleep. And it's recommended that we as adults get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. And of course, this is not going to happen every single night. And I've shared in past episodes about the importance of sleep and ways we can improve our sleep. But what I want to just share right now is just to remind ourselves to be intentional about still really getting the hours of sleep that we need. Because if we are not getting that sleep, it leads to other issues. You know, I have a friend right now who's struggling, and I'm working on helping her with some nutritional products, but you know, when you aren't getting the sleep that you are used to, and it's disrupted, and then you're not feeling as good the next day, and your energy is not like it normally is, and then when it comes time to go to sleep at night, you start to get a little anxious or stressed because you're worried that you might not sleep, and it's just a vicious cycle. So there are definitely some natural remedies that you can try that can be beneficial, and please feel free to reach out to me if you want to know more about what I do. But I just want to say keep in mind the importance of getting your sleep through these next couple, two or three busy months that we have in front of us. And then in addition to our sleep, the other important habit is still to keep our nutrition on track, keep our nutrition on point. And again, I'm happy to help you with that if you are struggling or you have questions about how to do that and what you should be doing for your overall nutrition. It makes such a difference, my friends, when you can keep some degree of consistency in your day-to-day routine with your nutrition, with your meals, with getting in the proper amount of nutrients and minerals and getting in your protein and carbohydrates and fat and consuming a balanced diet on a day-to-day basis. It is going to help you not only with your energy, but it's going to help you with your immune system so that you can keep those germs at bay so that you can hopefully get through the season without getting any illness at all. And yes, it is. We're entering the flu season, and a big reason for that is because as we get into this time of year, the days are shorter, so it's darker earlier. We are inside more often, and then the temperature changes and gets cooler. But more than anything, it's being inside and not, you know, getting out, not getting out and moving and getting that fresh air. And you know, for those of us who travel during this season, you know, we're maybe in an airplane or we're, you know, in congested areas and airports and that sort of thing. So you have to really, really be intentional also with your nutrition and make sure you're getting high quality nutrition, you're getting your supplementation in, whatever that looks like for you, and really, really taking care of that so that you can keep your energy up so you can be feeling good, and so that you can avoid as much as possible getting any of the germs and any of the sicknesses that can float around during the season. And the other habit that goes hand in hand with that is getting your movement in, getting some form of exercise in. And that's something that you can do in the just your own neighborhood, getting out and walking, getting out and going for a run. If you go to a gym or you go to a studio, keep that consistency going. And again, it's so easy, right? It's so easy to say, oh, I need to do this, we're on this errand, or I need to go shopping, or I need to do this, or do that. And sometimes those start to kind of creep in and disrupt our normal routine. And I want to encourage you, even if it's a short workout, even just I always say something is better than nothing. Keep that movement going, keep your body strong, keep strength training consistent, and also the stretching and the relaxation, all of that is so critical. Those are habits you want to just keep keep intentional with throughout the holiday season and make sure that you are really taking care of yourself more than normal. I mean, it's it's that time of year where we can maybe kind of slip up a little bit in these different areas and our regular healthy habits, but it's that time of year where it's important more than ever, right, to stay consistent with those healthy habits. And I want to encourage you to do so. And then just a little bit of a mindset shift. You know, sometimes we have setbacks, or maybe we aren't feeling as good as we would like to, or maybe we're having a day where we're just feeling a little bit under the weather. Listen to your body, take care of yourself, rest if you're getting the sign that you need to rest. If you feel like you're fighting a bug or you're not feeling 100%, give yourself that permission to take a little downtime if you need it. And then also if we can work on that mindset shift, if we get discouraged or we have any kind of a setback, instead of getting down on ourselves or getting frustrated and wondering why is this happening to me, if we can rephrase that in a way where we're saying, oh, this is happening for me, and be able to accept it and be able to approach it as a learning opportunity. I know that's a lot easier said than done in some cases, but there are going to be challenges, there are going to be setbacks, and again, it's so important this holiday season, these next few weeks more than ever, to keep that positive mindset and to be able to just do that little bit of a shift if you go through a challenging time to try and really approach it and look at it from that standpoint. What can I learn from this? I what what am I what am I learning through this? Rather than why am I going through it? What can I learn through it? And just little subtle shifts like that can help so much. So, again, just the reminder: our habits, our mindset shifts are so critical all throughout the year, but especially these last few weeks of the year when you're going through the holiday season. Keep intentional with your healthy habits, getting your sleep in, getting the proper quality nutrition in on a day-to-day basis, and getting your exercise and movement in regularly is so critical to keep that energy up, to keep your energy up and be able to really thoroughly enjoy this special time of year with your loved ones and keeping that energy up and just having that vitality and joy through these next few weeks, but also into the coming years. That's one of my main points of even doing my podcast is to share these wellness tips and share guests with you all that are giving us tips and ideas and education to help us live our best lives so that we can live lives full of vitality and longevity for many years to come. And with that being said, I also want to share for all of my moms, keep a look out. I am going to be opening up spots in my mom who flourish mentorship program that is going to be starting after the first of the year. I cannot wait. We are going to be diving in so many different wellness topics and supporting each other in the area of motherhood and just all the different milestones and phases that we go through with moms. So keep a lookout for that. I have some special, special bonuses that are going to be offered for Black Friday. So that's going to be coming out very soon. Spaces will be limited, so keep a lookout for that. And I'm so excited to have many of you join us in our kickoff mentorship program that will start in January. But we will be opening up spots very soon. So keep a lookout for that. And with that being said, my friends, have a beautiful, blessed rest of your week. Take time for yourself and your wellness and keep those healthy habits going into and through the holidays so that we cannot just survive, but we can flourish and thrive. Have a wonderful week, everyone. We'll see you next time on Words of Wellness. Thank you so much for tuning into today's episode.
