Shelly's Shares: How To Outsmart Greenwashing And Choose Truly Clean Products
Ever notice how a once-trusted “natural” brand suddenly feels different? We open the hood on wellness marketing and show how to shop with clarity in a market full of green leaves, soft colors, and big promises. Shelly shares why brand buyouts can change what’s in your favorite juice or protein powder, how to spot red flags like sucralose and vague flavor blends, and a simple system you can use to verify claims without spending hours in the aisle.
We start with a quick reset on what really matters: ingredients over imagery. From there, we dig into greenwashing—how words like natural and clean are used to create trust without accountability—and what third‑party seals actually mean. You’ll learn how to treat USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified as helpful signals rather than guarantees, and how to pair them with a fast ingredient scan to make confident choices.
If you’re a parent juggling wellness for a household, follow some of Shelly's simple steps to help your family be their healthiest. Just making simple clean swaps can make all the difference in health, energy and longevity now and into the future! And for moms who want deeper support, I share details about our upcoming Moms Who Flourish mentorship—coaching on nutrition, fitness, sleep, and stress that fits real life and real milestones.

I used to try some products from certain companies, and now they've been bought out. There's a particular juice company that used to have really pretty clean, healthy juice products, and they have since been bought out by Pepsi. And so there's a lot of companies like this that have been bought out by some of these larger companies that have no interest in producing or putting out natural healthy products. Do you get confused by all of the information that bombards us every day on ways to improve our overall health and our overall wellness? Do you often feel stuck, unmotivated, or struggle to reach your wellness goals? Do you have questions as to what exercises you should be doing, what foods you should or shouldn't be eating, how to improve your overall emotional and mental well-being? Hello everyone, I am so excited to welcome you to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly Jeffries, and I will be your host. My goal is to answer these questions and so much more. To share tips, education, and inspiration around all of the components of wellness through solo and guest episodes. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you. To bring in guests who can share their journey so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness, and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life, and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today. Hello, my friends. Welcome back to Words of Wellness. This is our episode of Shelly's Shares. And I am going to highlight a couple of really important topics today. And it's something that I share about often. And if you have been following me at all or listening to my podcast on a regular basis, I have talked about chemicals and toxins a few times, a few times. And it is something that I'm very passionate about. I have a masterclass on it. It's something that I speak on when I do my mom's who flourished wellness events. And I have shared about this topic for years, quite frankly, years. And you know, it's something that I've researched and learned about through the years and continue to research and learn about and continue to try new products that claim to be promised to be non-toxic. And you have to nowadays really do a little bit more research, a little bit more investigative work, if you will, because what happens is many companies will claim to have a natural product, or a product will on the label say natural or organic, or or they'll even make it look like it's a clean product when in actuality it might not be, or it might not be as clean as they claim. Have been bought out by some of these bigger companies that do not have our health in mind when they are putting out their products. They do not have us or the best interest of our health in mind. So I just wanted to kind of as a reminder and to alert to all of you, especially moms out there, when you are shopping for products, you really want to start to get in the habit, if you're not doing this already, to look at the labels. And I and I talk about this a lot, and it's not so much the label, the you know, the main label on the product, but it's looking at the ingredients that's in that product. So there are a couple companies that you know, I I don't know how many of you have used them, but just as an example, I used to try some products from certain companies, and now they've been bought out. There's a particular juice company that used to have really pretty clean, healthy juice products, and they have since been bought out by Pepsi. And so there's a lot of companies like this that have been bought out by some of these larger companies that have no interest in producing or putting out natural healthy products. So I just wanted to alert everyone to that. It's really important again to read the ingredients labels. I can't stress that enough. I was at a fitness grand opening event over the weekend, and there was a gal there who she just started a business, and it's really great. She's she's making protein balls and all these different flavors and and selling them. She just started this business, and so I was really excited for her. And I asked her what protein she uses. And I'm not going to make any names, you know, talk about the the name of the or the brand name that she uses. But what I always do when I come across someone sharing any kind of product, but especially when it's a nutritional product, especially when it's a shake or a protein powder, I automatically right away go and look at that product and I look at the ingredient label. And I did this with this particular product that she uses in her protein balls, and it contains artificial ingredients, artificial sweeteners, it contains sucralose. So it's just a reminder. And again, I will I will continue to share this information and continue to remind all of my listeners because it's an ongoing journey, it's not about perfection in any way, shape, or form. This is a a topic that I am pretty well versed on, but it's still something that I continue to learn on and continue to read about and research about because it's you just can't, like so many, so many areas of our health nowadays, you you just cannot make the assumption that the powers that be have our health in mind. They just don't. It comes back to money. That is the main driving force in all of these, all of these products. And I know I'm I'm sure I'm speaking to the choir, but it's just so important. And I have to remind myself sometimes as well, because there are some products that I look at and I think, oh, that looks really good. Oh, I think that they are more of a natural company. But again, this is why I'm sharing this today. Some of those companies that I've used in past years have now been bought out by these larger, larger companies that that produce so many items that that are not clean and not healthy for us. So it's just a reminder, and I think it's important that when you are looking at products, another another reminder is to look and see if there's any stamps, you know, um the stamp of something being organic. Having that official stamp on the product is going to be a little bit more of a guarantee that yes, it is organic. And interestingly enough, same thing with products that are non-GMO. There's a a seal, so it's a it's a verified seal. And you know, even with that, sometimes we can't always be a hundred percent certain. But if you look at those seals and you see that there's a verified verified seal that a product is non-GMO, they have the organic seal of stamp on their product, then I would say for the most part, uh, it can be it can be safe. But sometimes again, if there's a claim that a product is natural, clean, it's not always going to be a hundred percent certain that that product is clean. It can be very, very misleading. And I've talked about greenwashing before, and green washing is when a company with their product or their label by what they might claim on the label, or maybe even the design of it, even if you even if the design of the label looks clean, and maybe there's a couple like green leaves on it to make it look like it's a clean and perhaps organic natural product, many times that is just misleading the public. So again, it just comes back to doing the research for yourself, looking at the ingredients label, knowing what you're looking for, knowing what you want to avoid. And again, I say this all of the time as well when it comes to food products, you're looking to avoid artificial ingredients, preservative preservatives, artificial sweeteners like sucralose. These are all different uh items that you want to look for and and avoid. So I hope this helps. This is just a quick, quick reminder today. As I as I was noticing, I came across this list of all of these companies that used to be natural, now have been bought out by these larger companies that have nothing to do with producing natural and organic products. So you have to really look at that now. You have to really look at who, okay, who owns this company? Who owns this product? Because you you could you could you will most likely be kind of shocked to know that some of these products, like when I'm mentioning this particular juice item that we used to on occasion purchase years ago, now is is owned by a soda company, you know. So things like that, they're very, very sneaky. So I just wanted to remind everyone of that. And I also want to announce for all of my moms out there, I'm very excited that we will be having our Moms Who Flourish mentorship kicking off after the first of the year in January. It's going to be a mentorship program with mentorship and coaching from myself in the areas of wellness, all areas related to wellness, nutrition, fitness, stress management, the importance of sleep, combining all of that with the different milestones that we experience as mamas. And it's going to be a whole program for all of my moms out there, and I'm going to be offering very soon a very exciting Black Friday special. So stay tuned if you're not yet following me on Instagram. You can follow me at Wellness with Shelley J andor at Mom Su Flourish. So stay tuned. More to come on that topic, but but be watching for the announcement so you can get on that list and claim your spot. There will be some very special extra bonuses that I'm going to offer in the month of November. And this is going to be a very, very special, unique community just for all my moms out there.
