What you do before the world wakes up can change how the whole day feels. We share a simple, flexible morning routine that includes a little sunlight, gratitude, journaling, and movement. Shelly shares how a few intentional choices—hydration and a light protein start, five minutes of fresh air, a short spiritual or reflective reading, and a quick strength or cardio block—can be  the best start to your day!

We talk about how language and the words you say to yourself affect your beliefs. Also, the benefit of stepping outside first thing for early daylight to set your circadian rhythm is a valuable part of the morning. In addition, the neuroscience behind gratitude has shown adding it to your practice can improve moods, energy and increase resilience. Shelly also highlights the “Miracle Morning” concept to fit the essentials into an hour or less, with a compressed option for busy days that still delivers a meaningful reset.

Whether you prefer a quiet verse with coffee or a quiet reflection with tea, this discussion will potentially help you design a morning that can become a routine. Expect practical steps you can try tomorrow, encouragement to shape your inner dialogue, and movement options that meet you where you are—walk, run, strength, or yoga. If this sparked ideas, tap follow, share it with a friend who needs a calmer start, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find Words of Wellness. What’s the one habit you’ll add to your morning?

SPEAKER_00:

We know how much of what we think and what words come out of our mouth, how much that affects our mind and our brain. The words that we speak and the words we tell ourselves are very, very powerful. Do you get confused by all of the information that bombards us every day on ways to improve our overall health and our overall wellness? Do you often feel stuck, unmotivated, or struggle to reach your wellness goals? Do you have questions as to what exercises you should be doing? What foods you should or shouldn't be eating? How to improve your overall emotional and mental well-being? Hello everyone. I am so excited to welcome you to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly Jeffries, and I will be your host. My goal is to answer these questions and so much more. To share tips, education, and inspiration around all of the components of wellness through solo and guest episodes. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you, to bring in guests who can share their journeys so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness, and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today. And today I'm going to share briefly with you a few ideas for getting into a regular morning routine, which is something that I actually started probably really regularly, about maybe I don't know, three, four years ago. And I just thought I would piggyback. I know last week I shared about my personal wellness routine and what an average day looks like. And I wanted to talk a little bit about a morning routine with everyone and share a little bit about what I do and also share some things that have helped me get into a routine. And I know first and foremost, you hear this often, and it's something that I am intentional about, not looking at my phone first thing in the morning. Now, do I do it on occasion? Of course, but I'd really make a point not to read emails, not to go into social media, not until I've done enough the other parts of my morning routine first. And basically for me personally, I start first thing, and I come downstairs and I mix up my hydrate drink with my electrolytes and my hyaluronic acid, drink that up, and then I drink some protein and I grab my coffee and then I go to the couch and I sit on the couch. If it's warm enough, I try and go outside and I will sometimes sit outside, but I also make a point to go outside and get maybe five minutes of fresh air, sunlight, and just stay out there for just a few minutes in nature. It's very relaxing, and I know that it's beneficial to get a little sunlight on your face and your skin first thing in the morning. So that's something that I do. And then I make sure I open up my Bible apps. Now, the trick with this is that the Bible apps are, of course, on my phone. So I will have my phone in the morning for that reason and that reason only, so that I can open up my Bible apps. And for any of you who are interested, maybe you have a Bible app if you are one who reads the Bible and looks at verses daily. These are two great ones that I love. And it's actually, I would say, the one it's called. The app itself is looking like it just has the picture of the Bible, and it says it's called the Holy Bible. And when you click on it, it will share a verse of the day. And then there was always someone who shares maybe a minute or two of a little bit of a summary about that verse, and then there's a written devotion, and then there's a prayer to go along with it. So it's really great. If you want to know more about it or you want to know what it is, just send me a message through Instagram, and I can I can send you a link and you can add it on your phone. It's really helped me to get into the habit of reading my Bible and reading Bible verses every single morning. And if this is not for you, totally okay, but I am just sharing what I do with my morning most mornings, what is included in my routine. And I will share with you too. I read a few years ago, and this really kind of helped me, and this might help some of you. There's a book called The Miracle Morning, and it is so great because the author breaks down basically a great way to fit in everything you want to fit in in a morning routine in a short amount of time, in a doable amount of time. The author is Hal L. Rod, and it's called The Miracle Morning, and it's a great book. I highly, highly recommend it if you haven't yet read it. It really, really helps with just breaking down different components of the morning routine and how to fit everything in. And it's it's really, really great. So I highly recommend that book, The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. So I get into my Bible verses, I read the Bible verses, and take some time to pray, or sometimes I take time and pray when I go out on my walk and my run after I've spent my time on the couch with my Bible verses, with my coffee in hand, and usually with at least one of our pups is usually sitting with me. So I do that, and then I also take time to read out of a book, and I haven't been, I will be totally transparent, I have not been as good about this lately because I end up getting into my routine with my verses, and and I just haven't been going through my my routine as quickly as I would like to fit in a little bit of reading, and then I end up reading at night, which is also very good. But having that time in the morning really helps to read, even if it's just a few pages, it doesn't have to be a lot. And another thing that I recommend that I do, and sometimes I actually do this before I get out of bed, is just say a prayer of gratitude, think about things that I am grateful for, and you know, there's definitely a nice list of things, and I think that this is also an important way to begin our day because it sets the tone. If we have gratitude in our hearts, we we we can't be in a bad mood, right? It sets the tone for the day, so we're starting off in a positive mindset, and so I highly recommend whether you write down three things you're grateful for or ten things you're grateful for. I have actually a couple journals that I write in, and that's another part of the morning routine is taking some time to write out some thoughts. Um, sometimes I have some thoughts that come to me after I've read my Bible verses, and I'll jot those down, or I just journal and write what's on my mind at that point in time. So I think journaling is really, really valuable as well. And what I want to share with all of you too, when it comes to gratitude, there's so much information out there and studies to back up the benefits of taking time to have gratitude. And I just wanted to share a couple, a couple quick points when it comes to just the neuroscience and how it affects our brain. Uh, first one is that gratitude shows that it activates brain regions associated with reward, enhanced feelings of contentment, and emotional well-being. So, again, such a great way to start a day with gratitude for these very reasons. Also, regular practice of gratitude can lead to long-term positive changes in the brain, supporting mental health and resilience. And I I see that with so many people, and I see it within myself. If I have something that's bothering me, I tend to not dwell on it for very long. And I'm I'm grateful that I have that ability to be resilient, but I think this has definitely helped me through the years to really, you know, train my brain and really focus on the positive things and have that gratitude. It really, really helps. So the other point, simple exercises like keeping a gratitude journal can improve mood, increase empathy, and strengthen social bonds. So there you have, there are three really, really important key points when it comes to having gratitude. It activates the brain associated with reward. It can lead to long-term positive changes in the brain, supporting mental health and resilience, and keeping a gratitude journal can improve mood, increase empathy, and strengthen social bonds. So I think it's so important and to just think about those areas and the benefits of taking just a little time out of our day to focus on the positive, to focus on what's good in our lives, to focus on the gratitude. And I I'm the first to say it it's not always perfect, and our lives are not always perfect. But when we take this time, more often than not, it can help turn our attitude around. It can turn our our what we're focusing on around, and it can just help us be, of course, in a little bit more of a better mood, which is a good thing. That's a good thing, right? To start the day in a positive, a better mood. And we know we know how much of what we think and what words come out of our mouth, how much that affects our mind and our brain. The words that we speak and the words we tell ourselves are very, very powerful. So I hope you really start to maybe incorporate some of these different things into your morning. Maybe you're doing it already. I would love to hear what your morning routine looks like. Please message me. I would love to hear. I also, after I've taken the time to have my coffee and go through my verses and journal a little bit and focus on gratitude, then it's time to get some exercise. And that looks like a run, usually, or maybe a walk, some strength training. Maybe I go to the studio and take a yoga class. Um, but that really kind of wraps up my morning routine. And I will be the first one to admit, depending on my morning or my day and what I have planned. Yes, I do sometimes spread out that morning routine a little bit so it goes a little bit later into the morning. But there are ways that if you have a tight schedule, you can definitely condense the time and get it all accomplished within, I think, an hour. In fact, that's what that book, The Miracle Morning, talks about. He breaks everything down into 10-minute time blocks so you can get everything done in the morning that you want to get done. And again, the science, it backs it up that when you can get into a routine like this, it helps again, you your day, it helps your mood, it helps productivity with your job and your business. So I just wanted to kind of share a little bit about my morning routine, what it looks like, in hopes that it maybe motivates some of you to maybe incorporate something that you haven't yet incorporated. And again, like I said, I would love to hear about what your morning routine looks like. And I think it's just such a valuable thing that we we can get into doing on a regular basis. And I and I really want to encourage you to do so if you're not already, and at the very least, start your morning with a prayer of gratitude. Start your morning with journaling what you're grateful for. It really, it really sets the tone for the day. I promise you. So, with that, my friends, I hope you find value in this today. Take time for yourself and your own personal wellness. And until next time, have a beautiful, blessed rest of your week. Thank you so much for tuning into today's episode.
