Hello, my friends, welcome back to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly and I will be your host, and I am excited to introduce my guest today. She is a chiropractor, originally became a chiropractor and then she still does that work, but alongside that she has become a metabolism and strength coach for busy women. So we have a lot to talk about today. So welcome, dr Sienna Olson.

Speaker 1:

Yes, so excited to be here.

Speaker 2:

Thank you for having me. Absolutely Thank you for being here and for our listeners. This is our, our take two. We had a little bit of a tech issue on our original recording, so we get to do this again, which is always kind of fun. So a little redo, so yeah, we're just perfecting it.

Speaker 1:

It's just going to be that much better this time Exactly.

Speaker 2:

Exactly, we're just perfecting our craft. So so I know we talked about and we can talk about today the fact that you got into chiropractic school and refreshed my memory. What led you into that in the first place, because I know there's a story there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so I've always been really into health and wellness and fascinated by the human body itself. But I really had this big experience in high school where my mom was really, really sick, like to the point where she was in and out of the hospital for like six months and each time she would go in, doctors couldn't figure out what was going on with her. We would leave feeling frustrated, no answers or questions being answered, rather, and it was just a very grueling process and especially at 15, I just remember looking at my mom and being like this is not my mom, this is not the superhero, strong, resilient woman that I look up to. She was just really suffering and I felt really helpless in that moment because no one could help her and she couldn't really help herself either because she didn't really know what was going on. And through this whole process I just remember feeling very dismissed, my mom being dismissed by medical doctors, nurses, things like that, and just our family as a whole just felt very dismissed, Like everyone kind of just assumed that she was a drug seeker because she kept coming back and they couldn't figure it out.

Speaker 1:

And I mean my mom's like the furthest thing from that.

Speaker 1:

If anything, she's like very sensitive to any sort of narcotics or medications in that realm, and so that really kind of lit a fire within me to be like, okay, like I know I want to do something in the medical field, but I don't want to be like a traditional Western medicine doctor.

Speaker 1:

And not because I have anything against that profession, more than anything, I just didn't like their work-life balance, how much time they aren't able to spend with their patients. And again, it's not that doctors don't want to spend more time with their patients, it's just the system that they're navigating that doesn't allow for that. And so I decided to pursue chiropractic and got my doctorate in that, and while I was in school I also got my master's degree in sports medicine. And here we are. So now I get to spend as much time as I want with my patients and help them really understand what's going on with their body and be able to translate all of the medical jargon that does come their way, whether it's a really serious thing that's going on for them or an orthopedic surgery, whatever it may be. Just, my ultimate goal is to make sure that all of my patients feel seen and heard and really understand what all of their options are and not just be pigeonholed into one direction.

Speaker 2:

It's wonderful because you've combined like the best of both. You know to be able to like the best of both. You know to be able to do like you say do do the chiropractic work, be able to spend more time with your patients, which I know is a huge deal, especially this day and age and also to be able to go that one step further and and and coach those that might want to seek out you know ways to improve their overall health, their metabolism, their physique, their just their overall wellness, and that's huge.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it really, really is, and that's a huge reason.

Speaker 1:

Why I wanted to start coaching is because I obviously love being a chiropractor, but I was starting to feel like this, like knock, knock, nudge, nudge, feel where I'm like I just need like a little bit more, because I mean, especially with the internet now, the potential of reach and impact is so significant and I just really felt a strong calling to tap into that more and help more women specifically have a better understanding of their body and to optimize their health from the inside out, even amongst, like busy schedules or if they're being girl bosses and CEOs, just being able to understand their bodies so that they can feel really strong and resilient. Because the better you feel on the inside, the more of a powerhouse you're going to be on the outside and then, as a result of that, you're going to feel more inclined to use your voice to make positive change in the world or lead with a strong impact or even just lead your household, because, at the end of the day, women are the CEOs of their homes and if they don't feel good, the whole house suffers.

Speaker 2:

It's so true. And it's funny because when he's saying that my husband is always the one he's like I can't go down. If I go down, the whole house goes down and I'm like, okay, well, he does kind of do a little bit more than I. I mean, he cooks. I have to say I have to admit he's a really good cook, I'm not so much. But he will always say I can't, I can't get sick, I can't go down.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and maybe he's like the spider building the web, but like women very much, are the threads of the web that catch everything and make sure everything is getting fed and done and there's no holes in the web in this example, and it really is a collective effort. But it is funny when men say that you're like, oh, you're so cute, I love it.

Speaker 2:

All right, whatever you think, okay, yeah, but that's a perfect way to put it like a whole web and just making sure there aren't any holes in it and everything gets taken care of. Sure, there aren't any holes in it and everything gets taken care of. I mean it's, it's definitely a work of, of a team, you know for sure. But I get it too Like I think about.

Speaker 2:

I was just sharing recently that I last week I was waking up and I wasn't feeling as good as I normally do and I don't know how you are, but I'm not. I'm not good when I start to, I even like remotely don don't feel my normal self, because I usually feel really good and energy and all the things. And so I have a moment where I'm like something doesn't feel right. I right away get kind of irritated, yeah Right, and I'm like not a really good patient because I don't like being sick. I mean, who does? Nobody does. But I think I'm kind of used to the feeling good the majority of the time. So if something isn't quite right, yeah, I'm like, ok, let's get figure this out right away and get this out of my system. And so anyway, I know how that can be, where you might have a day or two where you're like OK, well, I guess I'm just supposed to rest.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, relax. You know, that's such a normal thing and I'm very much like you were. If I have any sort of like twinge or ache or just like kind of feeling off mentally or feel like I'm getting sick, I'm instantly like action mode, like let's fix this.

Speaker 1:

And it's not because I'm afraid of feeling that way.

Speaker 1:

I also just know what happens if you don't get on top of it, and I think that's something especially doing what I do. It's such a bummer interacting with people who have been feeling that way for so long that they have forgotten what it feels like to feel good, because once you remember what it's like to feel good, you don't want to go backwards Like no one wants to feel bad. But so many people just become this identity of being sick or being injured or having pain somewhere or not being able to do the things that they want to do, and they accept it because they think it's just part of getting older. And I'm like I don't know about you, but I have no desire to be that old person, like I think we can all age gracefully. Like we may not be spring chickens at 85 like we were when we were 15. But you can certainly structure things in a way now to set yourself up so that you do have more pep in your step and can maintain your independence, which is what life is all about.

Speaker 2:

Oh true, and that's so important. So I'm so happy you bring that up and that was one thing I was noticing with some of the work that you do. It's so in alignment with what I do as well as is sharing with your clients, you know, information that's backed by science and then also focusing on longevity, and just like you're saying, I will always say, always say, you know, let's take steps now to prevent us from getting sick later. I know it's not a guarantee, but it's also the other side of that is just like you're saying, is we want to feel good. We don't.

Speaker 2:

It's not going to do us any good if we don't have a, a vibrant quality of life when we're 80. Like we want to feel good and have that longevity but be healthy at the same time. And I know exactly what you're saying. I get frustrated too where people will just accept how they feel or they don't understand how good they could feel. Like they've just become kind of into their routine and have accepted how they feel and not even realizing that they could really feel so much better or have that much more energy and be that much healthier. And I think that's the exciting thing that we have to share, and sometimes people just don't even realize it. We have to kind of point it out.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and especially with women who are running their households and are working at the same time and trying to build a life and a career. It's so easy for us to get hyper fixated on all of the things that need to get done that don't involve taking care of ourselves, and then you get to the point where you're ready to retire or send your kids off to school and you look up and you are like tire or send your kids off to school, and you look up and you are like what has happened to me over the last 20 years, like you don't even recognize who you are from a physical, mental, emotional standpoint. So then that really creates this like wake up call where it's like okay, am I going to do something about this or am I just going to allow myself to continue to do the same things and go through this suffering cycle over and over again?

Speaker 2:

I love that you bring that up because that's honestly a huge motivation for why I created Moms who Flourish and helping moms to put themselves as a priority. And it's not a selfish thing at all, but it's like you say, a lot of times, many times and I was hearing this as I was talking to moms and just seeing how a lot of times we put our self-care, our wellness, our fitness, all of those things kind of on the back burner or on the sidelines. So kind of coming back to putting it as a priority and I can see you know you get so into the routine and, whatever the case may be, putting everybody else first and maybe not ourselves, and so you're so right on that is being able to come back to. Okay, I need to put my health first.

Speaker 1:

If I am not feeling good and my cup is not filled, then I can't be helping everybody else around me 100%, and then you just enter this survival mode and you get exhausted and you start resenting your life and the people that you love and care about and, yeah, it's just no way to live and it's certainly not fun either. So I think, as much as it's easy to fall into it, it's challenging to step out. But once you step out, it's really easy to continue that, because when you feel yourself slipping back into that habit or routine that doesn't serve you it's just like when you get sick or if you're hurt you're like, oh, let's fix that. Looks like it's been about two weeks since I journaled or done any meditation or gotten a workout and I need to do all of those things that make me feel good.

Speaker 2:

It's so true, and that's the thing I think that's. That's sometimes a misconception, I don't know if you come across that, but thinking it has to be so time consuming. Right, it's taking little steps, and it doesn't have to be. We can take little steps along the way and get into that routine and the daily rhythm of taking that time for ourselves, whatever that looks like, but it doesn't have to be a long drawn out practice or process to make a difference.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely Like. It does not need to be fancy, it does not need to be expensive, like even just sitting outside in the grass and the sun can do you so much good. Just even 10 minutes of just quiet and you are grounding, or even if you're just sitting in your closet by yourself for 10 minutes, that could be so rejuvenating for people.

Speaker 2:

Just hiding, hiding in the closet? Yeah, love that you focus your practice or I should say your coaching practice on women, busy women, and help them with their. What we're talking about just getting into a routine to help them with their day-to-day health and wellness, right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So I really focus on, you know, teaching women how to build those habits, like you were saying, but really understand their body and whether they want to lose weight or repair their metabolism, because they've been running themselves into the ground and have hormone issues, gut issues, whatever it may be I really just walk with them through that process of just understanding how food impacts their body, how exercise impacts their body, and create a structured plan for them to follow so that they get that education, because one day they're going to grow up and graduate and be out on their own. So it's my responsibility to teach them all of these tools so that, when that time comes, they feel well equipped to handle all of life's curveballs or the monotony of life and just feel like themselves again, if not even better than ever before.

Speaker 2:

I love all that. Yeah, that's so important and I mean you and I are very much, very much the same in that. I mean it's just, you know, helping others put themselves first, but also just feel good, have that energy and know that it's possible, right, it's possible to have that energy and enjoy a vibrant lifestyle. And obviously it's not going to every day be like that, but it is possible. When we take care of ourselves and get the exercise, get the optimum nutrition, I mean it's just so huge and and you are mentioning too, like the hormones and being able to work with that and so that it doesn't work against us and we can work with it, you know, to to again take care of ourselves in whatever way we can, to just again be and feel our best is so, so huge.

Speaker 1:

Yeah yeah. It's such a game changer and I just love working with my clients too and them kind of going through the initial phases. You know it's it's kind of like the honeymoon phase of starting anything new. You're just super excited and it's so much fun. And then you get into the later parts of it and then all of a sudden the honeymoon is over and now you have to start peeling back the layers of yourself and you start to realize all of the little things that you do every day that you didn't realize you were doing, that were actually just minor insults of self-sabotage, and being able to take a step back and see that you're doing that makes a huge difference, because with anything, having the awareness is the first step to making a change, and so by them, being able to make that awareness or have that awareness and then kind of pivot to the other side and implement something new and different is one of the most rewarding things.

Speaker 1:

So just really encouraging a lot of agency with all of my clients through the whole process is something I'm really big on, because I think women especially don't give themselves enough credit for what they know, because, especially with the group of women I tend to work with and attract into my coaching. They're all very brilliant, like they know all the things, they listen to the podcast, they've tried all the diets, but it's just like information overload. So just taking or having someone like me take all that information and be like, okay, this is going to work best for you, we're going to focus on this and then, if we need to change it later on, we can. But just, I'm going to hold your hand, I'm going to be a couple of steps ahead of you and we're going to get through this together and it's going to be super fun.

That's wonderful. I love that. You know, I for many years with my students at the college and I would talk about the different essential nutrients and I'm exactly like you're saying. I was just carbohydrates. You do not want to cut them out, we need them, yeah, Various reasons, but most importantly because we need them for energy, and I think that's so good just to be educating and just reminding women and the public in general. Just getting back to the, the basics, I think too, don't you think? Sometimes?

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, I think there's. I mean, basics aren't sexy. It's not sexy, it's not appealing and it doesn't catch our attention as much. And it's because we've heard it so many times but for some reason it just doesn't stick as well, because maybe you've tried the basics before but they didn't work for you. But sometimes you have to play the game of Tetris within the basics and be really consistent with them over a period of time for them to actually work. I think people just get burnt out on trying all of these things. So then when there's this new, shiny, new diet or exercise routine or whatever it may be, they just get locked in on that and they're like this is my golden ticket, this is going to be the thing that makes me lose 30 pounds in 30 days. And it just creates this vicious cycle of even more confusion because that new shiny thing didn't work for you again.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's so true, and I used to tell my students that same thing as well, as, like you. Just, I think going back to what you were saying is bringing about clarity. So we live in this fast paced society that's just gotten faster through the decades and, of course, most people who have health goals or want to release weight, as you know, it's like they wanted it to happen, like last year and, realistically, for it to be long and sustainable it, we have to approach it from a healthy standpoint. So it's so wonderful what you're doing. I just I feel like we could. We could chat about this for for a really long time. Oh, yes, yeah, I yeah.

Speaker 1:

I just I feel like we could. We could chat about this for for a really long time. Oh, yes, yeah, I, yeah, I mean, I love everything that you're doing and I think it's so important, and just the community aspect too, with what you're doing and I want to build out too I'm working on a group coaching offer just because I've been in enough communities over this last year and I've really experienced the benefits of just going through whatever the thing is with that support really makes the transformation that much more significant and impactful. Because I feel like a lot of people feel like they're alone in what they're experiencing, but you never know how many people are just one step ahead of you. And you're like, oh my gosh, just last week I had this same thought, or I went through the same thing a few months ago Like let's talk about it, and just having those, those people in that same circle to be there for you and support you through all of those moments of life that feel a little heavy or just uncertain, really makes it feel a lot more digestible and empowering to just walk through it.

Speaker 1:

And you're like, all right, if she did it, I can do it too. It's going to be okay, kind of sucks. Right now I'm a little sweaty and I don't like it, but it's going to get better.

Speaker 2:

Well, I love you saying that because I feel exactly the same way.

Speaker 2:

I just really really feel so strongly when you're talking about any maybe a smaller group setting that can be still intimate, but you still have that support of each other. And I keep coming back to exactly what you just said. Is that for me personally I no-transcript, I want to be able to provide that for other moms and it's just like you're saying you have that support and you can cheer each other on and even though we are also the educators, we also can have that different perspective to encourage and motivate and help our clients through whatever phase they're going through. And I think that's so huge and I totally agree with what you're saying and I just think it's there's benefits obviously to both working with someone one on one, but I've always felt like the community, because not only do you have the coach, or, like us, the facilitator, the coach, but now you have a group of however many that can, they can learn from each other and we can learn from Felt that to be such a strong, strong benefit to everybody involved.

Speaker 1:

And so, yeah, I just I totally agree with you on that experience in the communities that I've been a part of recently, even the questions that people will ask can be so thought provoking, and I call them brain candy because I'm like, oh, I've never thought of that. That's such a good question or like such a good idea, and I think just getting any of that just really feeds your soul too. It just gives you a different perspective on things and kind of creates that newfound curiosity and novelty that we all like. And just being able to receive that from other people and share that with others too, I think can be hugely transformational, and just the energy exchange in itself is just so lovely. I just love it.

Speaker 2:

A hundred percent, and it's like going back to what you said. You know, I I feel like I experienced this more and more. Where you might feel like you're alone and I even will say this in some of the information I share about my program, you know do you feel like you're on an Island, do you feel like you're trying to function just by yourself and that you're the only one going through it? And you're not. And that's a beautiful thing, whether it's motherhood and or business, because that's another thing that I've learned lately too, is I'll be going through something business wise, and then I hear someone who, quite a few steps ahead of me, they are going through it, or they've gone through the exact same thing and then I'm like, okay, it's not just me through the exact same thing and then I'm like, okay, it's not just me, yeah, yeah, no, that's so true.

Speaker 1:

Cause I think too, especially as females, we can feel embarrassed about being unsure or not having all of the answers, and I think it can be really challenging to also be vulnerable, to step forward and admit that too, because we have a lot of pressure to keep it together, regulate our emotions and, you know, just be a good little girl.

Speaker 1:

So I think being able to step over that and kind of step into the crowd with other people and be okay, to be like, yeah, I kind of feel like a hot mess lately. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster and I'm here to talk about it can be so like such a big release for women to just to be able to overcome that, that sense of like needing to be a certain version of themselves and not ever allowing themselves to step out of that and be that more emotional, touchy, feely version of themselves too, because it's it's important you have to have that, that pendulum swing, like sometimes we're going to be in our more masculine and it feels really easy and good, and other times we just need a little bit more of a hug or a nap or a snack.

Speaker 2:

But true. And then when you realize you're not the only one, it also has this ability to bring out more boldness right and a little more confidence, knowing like, okay, it's not just me, okay, okay, I've got this right, I've got this.

Speaker 1:

Then you have a whole cheer squad behind you too, so, like falling apart, they're like no, no, here you go. We're going to boost you up a little bit. We're going to give you all the pep in your step that you need to get to that next step or tap into that next version of yourself, and it just feels so much easier just being able to rely on that group.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's so true. Well, this has been awesome. You are just so lovely and such a gem. I love chatting with you I really do, and I hope we can do something together more in the future. You know collaborating or something would be super cool. I would love that. That would be so much fun, oh fun. So, with the being conscientious of your time and the listeners time, I know we could continue, but what do you do for yourself, like you're part of your routine when it comes to your own personal wellness?

Speaker 1:

So something that I thought was really silly for a very long time was journaling. And then I finally was like, okay, I've listened to enough podcasts and I've read enough research that journaling might be helpful for people, and myself included. And so I started journaling, probably a year and a half, two years ago, and it has been so helpful. And I think the biggest roadblock for me was like, what do I journal about?

Speaker 1:

And there's so many prompts that you can look up or follow, but I sometimes will just let her rip, like I have no intention behind what I'm going to say, I just start writing, and then, by the time I get to the end of my little session, I just start writing, and then, by the time I get to the end of my little session, I'm like, wow, I see what's going on here. And so sometimes just getting it out and putting it onto paper, yes, can feel intimidating, because there's something about putting words on paper that makes it feel more real, but not doing that just gets things to be like festering, and so that's probably one of the best things I've ever done for myself. That I still continue to do is just journaling, and so sometimes I follow prompts and, like I said sometimes I just let her rip if I'm in a place, and it's just been so healing.

Speaker 2:

Thank you for sharing that, because I need, I needed to hear that I need to have that reminder because I'm really good about my morning routine and my time, my quiet time, my prayer time, Bible time, read, exercise, all of the things and I sometimes will write and then but it's not a regular habit and there was a time that I was journaling and I kind of stopped doing it.

Speaker 2:

So I just love that reminder because I think it is so important, especially when we have and I kind of stopped doing it. So I just love that reminder because I think it is so important, especially when we have and I know I'm sure we're the same we're constantly like thinking about things in ways we can serve our clients and you know there's just so many things going on, not just for you and me, but just people in general. So, like you're saying, it's such a great way to kind of get some of that stuff that's in our dome on paper, so constantly like re, you know, thinking about it and rewriting it in our mind, and so I really thank you for saying that, because that's something I need to incorporate as well.

Yeah, well, I'm, I'm happy it was the little God wink, nudge, nudge reminder that you needed. Yes, it's so easy just to get consumed with so much information. I mean, we're just in information overload all the time, and so sometimes it can be overwhelming and feels like you've kind of lost yourself in the noise, and so just dumping it all out can help you just tap back into yourself and see where you're actually at.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's so good, so so good. Well, my friend, this has been wonderful and I'm just so happy it worked out for us to do this again. And and what would you share? You know I should say any last words of wellness or inspiration you want to share with our listeners.

You know, I think, especially with back to school season being in full swing and getting used to a new schedule for kids or yourself or maybe you don't have kids and you're just entering a new season where things are just changing Just remember to take it one day at a time and give yourself a lot of grace and just remember what's really important to you, because at the end of the day, all the stuff and things and little stuff that makes you upset, it doesn't really matter, and just don't lose sight of that and just remember to hold your own hand too.
