Shelly's Shares: Finding Balance: The Art of Enjoying Travel Without Sacrificing Wellness

Shelly Jefferis Season 2 Episode 104

Send us a text

Ever experienced that exhausted, disoriented feeling after returning from vacation? That "vacation hangover" is exactly what Shelly is unpacking in this personal, practical episode of Words of Wellness. Fresh from a meaningful trip to Wisconsin watching her son play baseball, she shares the real strategies that help her maintain wellness while fully enjoying travel experiences.

The balance between vacation enjoyment and wellness maintenance doesn't have to be complicated. Her approach includes simple daily movement (walking is perfect!), bringing along key nutritional products to support immune health during travel, and managing sleep schedules to minimize disruption. These small habits create the foundation that allows moments to enjoy that rooftop sangria or post-game ice cream without guilt or feeling completely derailed.

What makes vacation special is presence and joy, not perfection in our routines. There were days on her trip where vegetables were nowhere to be found on her plate - and that's perfectly fine! The goal isn't maintaining an impeccable wellness regimen while traveling, but rather creating enough consistency to keep energy high and recovery time minimal when returning home.

Beyond these travel wellness tips, Shelly is excited to announce her upcoming Moms Who Flourish Wellness event in Southern California and her new one-on-one mentorship program specifically designed for moms navigating wellness challenges, nutrition confusion, or the identity shifts of empty nesting. Connect with her on Instagram @wellnesswithshellyj to learn more about these opportunities to transform your approach to wellness. What small changes might make your next vacation more enjoyable and your return home smoother? The answers might be simpler than you think.

Speaker 1:

This is our Monday Shelly's Shares episode, and I want to come in here and tell you that vacation hangover is a real thing. Right? How many of you experience vacation hangover Now when you're listening to this? I would have been back home for a few days from our recent vacation where we went away to go watch our son Braden play baseball in his summer baseball league, and we traveled to Wisconsin and it was really amazing. It's our second trip to this location. Our older son, cody, played at the same location years ago, so that was pretty special to be back at the same town. We stayed at the same cute, gorgeous boutique hotel and we were with the same host family that our Cody had and our Braden's with them this season. So very, very special and I just wanted to hop in here real quickly and just share that. It's a real thing. You know I have a mixed emotions of, you know, being happy to be back home but also being sad to be away. We had such a great, great few days and it's just a real thing and I want to also share that.

Speaker 1:

Even with all that I do when I go away for my wellness, I still come back and make sure that I give myself some time to kind of recuperate. I try and plan so that I can have a day free when we come back from traveling to just kind of let my body recuperate from traveling and, you know, just have those moments to kind of reflect on the time away but also give myself a chance to rest and kind of get rejuvenated back into the routine of being home and a few things that I do when I'm away just to share a little bit and I believe I've shared this in a past episode, but just a quick overview. I make sure to get out and get some exercise, whether I go for a run or I go for a walk or we stay in a hotel that has a fitness center, and I try and do a little bit of something each and every day and it's not meant to be like this vigorous workout in any way, but it's just meant to keep me on track, keep my energy up and keep my body feeling good throughout the day. So a little bit of exercise each day is really critical. And again, walking is amazing, and a lot of times when we travel and this is, I'm sure, the same for you is getting out and exploring and walking places. It's such a beautiful way to really see countryside and see where you're staying and exploring new surroundings. It's just, it's really beautiful.

Speaker 1:

Something else that I do I make a point to pack all of my nutrition products, my protein shakes, my daily supplements, my daily collagen, and I bring all of that with us and it's something that I use daily. And it doesn't mean I don't let myself enjoy myself I absolutely do. But it's that confidence and knowing that I'm still getting a full meal replacement shake, full of vitamins and minerals and just complete nutrition to nourish my body while I'm away, to again keep me feeling good and keep my energy up and also keep my immune system strong, because, as we all know, traveling can take its toll on our immune system. I mean all the different time zones, traveling on a plane, being in airports around, all kinds of who knows what kind of germs are floating around, and so it's just a really important part of my day-to-day routine that I keep up, even when I'm away from home. So our shake, our meal replacement protein shakes. Like I mentioned, I take my collagen with me, so I have my collagen elixir each day, and then I take my supplements that I consume each day. I always pack those and bring those with me.

Speaker 1:

Something else that I do, and I guess you could say maybe I'm a coffee snob. I'm not quite sure, but I do love my coffee and we have organic coffee that we drink daily, and one of the things about coffee is that most coffee beans are very toxic. They are full of pesticides, and so I have a coffee that I drink that's very clean, it's organic, it's tested for mold and metals and it also has a very low level of acidity, so it doesn't upset the tummy in any way. So it's really and it's delicious. I just love it. So I always bring that with. Now again, it doesn't mean I'm not going to let myself have a cup of coffee in the hotel or at a cute coffee bar or wherever right. I still do that. But this is just. These are things that I bring to keep me on track with my nutrition and with my daily wellness routine.

Speaker 1:

Because, let's face it, did we go out and have ice cream? Of course, did we have some yummy cocktails, absolutely. I mean, the place that we stayed had a really, really cute rooftop bar and just a really, really cute bar inside the hotel and just a fun hangout, fun way to also meet people, talk to new people, and it was just a really great environment. So I kind of wanted to just hop in here today and just share and just reassure all of you that, yes, it's a normal thing to have a vacation hangover, but I want to encourage you that when you do travel, to the best of your ability, keep up with some of your wellness routine.

Speaker 1:

The other part to this, too, that I haven't mentioned yet is the sleep, and it can be tricky when you're away and you have a whole, completely different schedule than what you're used to, and also factoring in the time difference. And one thing that my husband and I try and do when we go away is we try and stay on the time zone from back home so that when we do come back home it's not completely disrupted and disruptive to our day-to-day schedule as we come back and get used to our routine. So that's just a suggestion that has worked for us. So, getting your sleep the best that you can when you're away, getting some exercise in and getting some regular nutrition in, Because, again, when we're away from home we might not be eating as healthy as when we are home and we also are on a different schedule, our nightly routine we were having lunches before we were headed to my son's games, because the games went from. We would get to the field around six and we wouldn't get out of there till like after 10 o'clock. So it's right in prime time, dinner time, and by the time we would leave most restaurants were closed. So again, it was just a different bit of a routine for us.

Speaker 1:

But you make it work. You have to kind of go with the flow and be flexible. But again, another reason I want to stress that it's so important to bring some nutrition with you, some protein shakes, something that you can fuel your body with, so you're at least getting some of those vitamins and minerals that your body needs on a daily basis. And then you do your best with the rest of the day, with getting your meals in and eating healthy but also enjoying yourself at the same time. Let's face it, like one of the days I don't think I had one salad or one piece of green the entire day, or one piece of fruit, which that is not normal for me, but it was okay. I'm like it's just one day on our vacation and it was totally fine.

Speaker 1:

But I share this again just to give you some tips, to let you know it is real. You come back, you might feel a little bit of this what's to say. You know, sometimes I feel like I've kind of been hit by a truck. I don't feel that extreme today, but when you have the travel and we left extremely early in the morning and then we got home very, very late last night. So you know that's a that's a different story schedule than what we're used to. So I want to encourage you that if you do do something like that, try and give yourself the next day just to kind of relax and rest and let your kind of body kind of acclimate and get back into your normal routine and rhythm. It really, really helps. So I hope you find this helpful.

Speaker 1:

Everyone, again, vacation hangover, it's a real thing. But some of these tips to, I hope, help you when you go away. They certainly help me and, again, I'm a full proponent of enjoying yourself. You have to have fun at the same time. But I really truly believe, for me personally, when I am still consuming my nutritional products and staying on track with some of my daily wellness routine, then I don't feel guilty. I never feel guilty enjoying myself and having that glass of sangria or that ice cream cone or what have you, because that's what it's about just enjoying yourself, whatever that looks like for you. Life is meant to be enjoyed, right? But along the way, we can take steps to be able to enjoy ourselves and stay healthy and feeling good and having energy at the same time. So, with that, I hope you find some value in this episode today. I hope you take some time for yourself and your wellness and, as always, have a beautiful, blessed rest of your week.
