Shelly's Shares: Finding Peace in Mixed Emotions, How Our Past Shapes Our Present
Emotions are rarely black and white, especially when it comes to significant occasions like Father's Day. Whether you're celebrating, grieving, or experiencing both simultaneously, this episode offers a heartfelt exploration of the complex emotional terrain many of us navigate during holidays and milestones.
Drawing from personal experience, Shelly shares how the seemingly contradictory feelings of profound sadness and deep gratitude can peacefully coexist when remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. This emotional duality isn't something to resist or feel confused by—it's a natural reflection of the depth of our connections and the impact certain people have had on our lives.
"Every heart has a history," and that history shapes how we experience the present. Our emotional wellness depends on our willingness to acknowledge, understand, and make peace with the full spectrum of our feelings. Looking back on difficult moments often reveals purpose and meaning that wasn't visible when we were in the midst of challenges. This perspective shift represents a powerful form of emotional growth and healing.
For those experiencing complicated feelings around Father's Day or any other significant occasion, Shelly offers gentle encouragement to explore those emotions without judgment. Whether you had an amazing father, a difficult relationship, or no father figure at all, there's an opportunity to recognize and appreciate all the people who positively influenced your journey. This practice of gratitude, even when mixed with sadness, can be profoundly healing.
If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear about your experience with mixed emotions and how you've navigated them. Subscribe to Words of Wellness for more conversations about emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing as we continue exploring all dimensions of health together.

Speaker 1:Now let's dive into our message for today. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly and thank you for being here. I wanted to start today just by quickly sharing, for anyone who is new, that on Mondays I release solo episodes and I've been calling them Shelly's Shares because I'm sharing sometimes my own personal experience, sometimes some educational information, but I also share just kind of short, brief episodes on Mondays and then on Wednesdays I release episodes with a guest, and so, if you've been listening for a while, I have been sharing words of wellness for about a year and a half now and really, really loving it. And again, I just wanted to share. If you happen to be new to my podcast, welcome. And again, right now we have two episodes that drop per week Mondays, a short, brief solo episode, and Wednesdays is always an episode with one of my amazing guests.
Speaker 1:So, without further ado, I'm going to jump in with what is on my heart today and when you listen to this some of you might listen to it around Father's Day and I just wanted to hop in here and today's episode is really more of kind of me sharing my heart and just sharing about emotions that may come up depending on what our experiences have been. Our experiences have been and you know, to be honest, we had a really awesome sermon in church this morning and, for whatever it is that you believe in, I think that this will all ring true and it does ring true, I believe, for all of us. But a couple things I wanted to share that really kind of hit home for me with this sermon, and one of which was the fact that every heart has a history. Each of our hearts have a history and I I'm at a stage of my life where I can really think back and appreciate a lot of the good moments through my life and, honestly, obviously nothing is perfect and we all have our struggles along the way, but I can look back and really see where I was meant to be and I can see the dots being connected, and I've shared this before and again. I will always say that with age comes wisdom, and you can always look back and go oh okay, that's why I experienced this, or that's why I went from here to there and you can kind of see why over time. And so that really hit me today. I thought that is such, so, so true.
Speaker 1:Every heart has a history and, you know, sometimes it's a moment of gratitude that we might be feeling, sometimes it's a moment of wow, that was a really big struggle, that was a really challenging moment, and maybe it's a time where some healing needs to take place, and so I just think that that felt like just almost not like it was giving permission to go through the motions and realize that we all have similar things that we've been through. But there was something comforting about that. Our heart has a history. We all have a history, and where I'm at today, because of the fact it's around Father's Day, is I started to have this wave of emotion come over me.
Speaker 1:Earlier today I have shared that my dad is no longer living, and it's such a mixed emotion around Father's Day because one there is sadness sadness that he's not here with me because I would give anything to be able to give him a hug and to talk with him and just share with him. So there's absolutely that feeling of sadness and yet, at the same time, there is the feeling of intense gratitude for being blessed with such an amazing dad. And then there's so much gratitude for my husband and the dad that he is for our children, and there is so much gratitude for my second dad, rick, who was another father figure in my life, and so much gratitude for my grandfathers. And so you know, I just I don't know how many of you can relate, but I had a moment today where I just started to get emotional and teary-eyed. But it was a mix. It was such a strong mix of sadness and happy tears at the same time, and I just wanted to hop in here and share because I think that sometimes we might feel I don't know if there's a little bit of guilt over feeling those emotions at the same time, or maybe we don't let ourselves feel them.
Speaker 1:And my message today is to encourage everyone, whatever it might be that you are experiencing and you know, a lot of times it happens around these different holidays, right, depending on what is going on in our lives, whether or not we have our dad still with us. Mother's Day was last month. My mom is no longer living either, and I think that that a lot of the time can bring up some intense emotions and conflicting emotions where we're like what does this exactly mean? And I knew today it was a combination of just the sadness and the happiness. The sadness but also the gratitude, because I truly feel like I have been so blessed with amazing men in my life and I hope that you can feel that too, and I hope that you can look at men in your life, even maybe if you did not grow up with a dad, or maybe you don't have a dad in your life now, but if you can look back and think of the different men in your life who influenced you in a positive way, I just think that's such a huge blessing.
Speaker 1:And again, another quote and it's something that I share all of the time but just to be reminded that all things in life, nothing happens by accident. I'm such a firm believer of that. Of course, I have a very strong faith and I know that all things work out for good in the end, and even when we are in it, even when we are in the most difficult times. I know this for myself personally we can later on look back and go okay, I see, I understand why this happened and I hope that you can do the same thing, because that is so freeing.
Speaker 1:And I felt like I wanted to share this today just from an emotional perspective, because, as we share on this podcast about wellness, we are sharing about complete wellness, and part of our complete wellness has to do with our emotional wellness, our emotional health, and we don't always get it right, it's not ever perfect. But I want to encourage you that when you have any of these emotions come up, that you feel them and you recognize them and understand where they're coming from and be able to have peace with that. I guess have some sort of peace, because I know for many it might not be easy to do that, it might be easier said than done, but I just felt, if I shared my personal experience, that that could hopefully encourage any of you, and I just think that is my message for today is just to know that we all we all have stuff right, we all have baggage, we all have life experiences and we all have a heart. That has a history and it's not always going to be great, positive, joyful moments, right. But if we can take those moments that maybe aren't as great and be able to understand and be able to grow through those moments and be able to look back at some point and understand why we went through what we did and be grateful for where we are today, I think that that is such a huge sign of growth and, again, such a great, just a freeing moment, just a freeing moment, and so I hope that this has some impact on you today and makes some sense to some of you.
Speaker 1:And again, if you have conflicting emotions coming up, I just want to invite you to take a moment, take a step back and think about it and try to understand where is that coming from? And it was so very clear for me earlier today as I just started to feel these tears well up and I went my gosh. I'm very sad that dad's not here, but I'm also so grateful that I was blessed to have him as my dad and I'm also so grateful for the different men in my life and that's a really, really great feeling and again, I know not everyone has that, but I hope that you can find that in your heart and find those people that you can think about that had an impact on your life, whether they are alive today or not, and be able to have that gratitude for how they impacted you as a person, because, let's face it, some people are not in our lives for the long haul, but there are some that were in our lives, that made an impact at that point of time, that they needed to be there at that point of time, and I really hope that you can all think about that and just have that gratitude for the people who have impacted you along the way. And at this moment, we are recognizing and talking about dads, father figures and men in our life, and I just want to give a huge shout out to all of the dads out there for all that you do and for all of you who have stepped into father roles whatever that looks like, and maybe for those that aren't quite dads yet. Just huge shout out to you dads yet. Just huge shout out to you, and I hope that this message today resonates with someone out there.
Speaker 1:And, with that being said, I hope you take time for yourself and your wellness on this day and, as always. Have a beautiful blessed day and a beautiful, blessed rest of your week. Everyone.
