Shelly's Shares: The Fleeting Moments: A Mother's Perspective on Cherishing Every Moment
Life moves so quickly, especially when raising a family. The wisdom in recognizing "these are moments we can't ever get back" forms the heartbeat of this deeply personal episode where Shelly shares about parenthood, being present, and finding joy in the stands of a baseball game.
After 35+ years as a health and wellness professional, Shelly shares insights from her most cherished role: being a mom. For over two decades, baseball has woven itself into her family's story. Now, with her youngest playing for Michigan while her older son coaches for Northwestern, Shelly has been traveling many weekends, soaking in each inning and creating memories that will last long after the season ends.
As a fairly new empty nester, she shares the clarity that comes along the experience. Without the competing demands of raising young children, we gain the ability to be more present, to appreciate nuances we might have missed in busier seasons. This emotional wellness perspective translates into practical wisdom for all parents: prioritize being physically present whenever possible, even when it means adjusting schedules, budgeting for travel, or making sacrifices elsewhere.
Shelly's daughter recently reflected on how she knows her mom and dad made it a priority to attend her dance performances and activities growing up. Now she hopes to offer that same gift to her future children. This generational passing of presence speaks to something fundamental in our wellness journey — the understanding that true joy lives in these shared moments, in witnessing our loved ones pursue their passions.
What brings you genuine joy? Whatever it is, Shelly encourages you to make space for it, to schedule around it, to be fully present within it. These experiences form the building blocks of your emotional wellness and create the memories you'll treasure most. my husband said you know, these are moments we can't ever get back, and so, even when they were little, we made such an effort to be at as many events and activities as possible. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life and that you will we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives, full of energy, happiness and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today.
Speaker 1:Hello everyone, and welcome back to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly Jeffries and I will be your host and I am hopping in here today to share a few thoughts with you all, mostly related to parenthood motherhood, I guess, you could say but really related to the emotional side of wellness and sharing a little bit of my personal experience and kind of what I'm in the middle of experiencing right now with my family, with my boys, and I just wanted to hop in here and share a little bit about the journey. And those of you who know me, you know that our boys have been involved in baseball for many years and it has been a really big part of our lives for 20, a little over 20 years, and it is something that brings me so much joy and I wanted to kind of talk about it a little bit because I I want to encourage any of you, moms and dads, when you have the opportunity to go to events that your kids are a part of, taking those moments in and just being fully present with those moments. Fully present with those moments and for many of you I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir, but this is a part of my life that brings me so much joy and you know there is something to be said as an empty nester. I think that it allows us to be a bit more present in events in our lives, maybe because we're at that different phase. We're at that phase where we aren't as busy with the schedules, we're not as busy with our kids' schedules and work schedules and trying to fit everything in and all of the things that come along with raising a family. It's a full, full schedule. As many of you know, I just, I just have so much gratitude for where our lives have been and where they have brought us to to this point.
Speaker 1:And, as many of you know, many of you know, right now our youngest just started his first year playing baseball for Michigan and I seriously, when it comes time for baseball season, I would be just happy as can be if I just had to spend all of the days just watching games. I just love watching my boys play ball, Just like back in the day when our daughter she was on the dance team through high school and she danced in her younger years and it just it was so much fun to watch. And right now I'm really in the in the thick of it. I mean, our youngest is playing for Michigan, and then our our older son, Cody, is coaching Michigan, and then our our older son, Cody is coaching and I, I just have so much joy in watching them both and I am so extremely proud of both of them. And that's just the season that we are in right now. And you know, there's lot, there are a lot of things that my daughter is doing. I'm super proud of her as well.
Speaker 1:And this is just an episode about what's going on currently, and currently for all you baseball fans, it's baseball season. For those of you who have boys playing baseball or you have boys in college playing baseball, you know, and it's a busy time, especially with traveling, and my whole approach is that in just a matter of I don't know a few weeks, a matter of a month, the season will be over. So whenever you are listening to this episode. I don't know when that will be for you, but the college baseball season will be ending in May and I always have the approach that I am just taking in as much as I can while it's happening, being present for as much as I can while it's happening, being present for as much as I can while it's happening, and I guess I just want to share with you all and encourage you to do the same, and these different phases of life are kind of just a little bit of a blip on the whole schedule.
Speaker 1:You know it goes so fast and I just make a point of just taking in as much of it as I can being present, being going in person and watching as much as I can and listen. I know it, it it gets costly and, believe me, traveling and hotel rooms and renting cars, all of the things, and I just make a point to as much as I can be there and it's just the best experience ever. And there are moments, you know, we can watch some of the games from home, but it's not the same as being there. You know, it's just not the same as being there, but I am grateful we can stream and watch some of the games at home, for sure, but I am grateful we can stream and watch some of the games at home, for sure. But this is just the moment that I am in the season of life that I am in, and I'm just very grateful for being able to have a schedule that allows me to go and travel as much as I can, to be there and to watch and to just experience the joy of watching our youngest son now do what he loves. And we've had a lot of years of that with our other two kids and it's just been such a blessing and I'm just enjoying it so, so much and it's one of those things that really brings me so much joy.
Speaker 1:So that's the part of this episode as well is to encourage you all to take time for those moments, those experiences that bring you joy, those experiences that bring you joy and you know I will often say, with age comes wisdom and with life experiences come comes wisdom. And I am just at this stage of my life where I am making a point to be very present and enjoy those moments, those moments that that bring me joy. And one of the biggest moments is happening right now and that's watching our son play baseball and then having the so much pride in our older son coaching. It's just been such a great experience and I don't take any of it for granted and it's a big. It's a big part of my journey as a mom and to me it's the best journey in the world and I'm super grateful to be able to be on it. And so I just thought I'd hop in today.
Speaker 1:It's really more of a an emotional, the emotional side of wellness, I guess, if you will, and I just want to again encourage you a couple things when it comes to your children, your kids, whatever age they are, to step back and take a moment and be as present as possible with them and the experiences that you have with them, because they are fleeting, they do go fast, and I often share that. Many years ago, when our children were young, my husband said these are moments we can't ever get back, and so even when they were little, we made such an effort to be at as many events and activities as possible, and I'm grateful that we did that. And just recently my daughter was talking to me about that and just kind of thinking ahead of her future plans and having a family, and and she says you know, you and dad were so great at being at all of our events and I want to be able to have the ability to do that as much as I can as well, and and so I know it's not always possible in in life experiences and job situations, but as much as you can be there and be present and just experience those moments, it's really priceless. And so I just wanted to share that a little bit, just a little bit of my personal journey.
Speaker 1:And in the middle of this baseball experience and baseball season and just traveling all over, and it's, it's a lot. It's a lot to be gone, you know, every weekend for three, four days at a time, but it's so well worth it. It's such a like I mentioned earlier, it's just such a short amount of time. It's literally you know what, February, March, April, May, like three, four months, and then it's done until the following season. There's definitely a couple of fall games and there's definitely some summer ball, for sure, but this is the thick of it. And you know I also have learned that I make a point not to schedule a whole lot during spring season, even with my Moms who Flourish wellness event. I know how to schedule that. So it's not in the middle of baseball season, because you just never know where I will be and what will be going on.
Speaker 1:But I must say it's a wonderful ride and I love it so much. And so I guess I could just say for those of you out there, moms and dads and baseball moms out there, you know what I'm saying and you can relate. And it's a wonderful journey. And I had a friend once say that when it comes to our boys and unis, as long as they can put that uniform on and that's that's what I enjoy as long as they're out there playing and they're putting that uni on, I'm going to take it all in and enjoy it as much as I can and be in the stands cheering for them as much as I possibly can.
Speaker 1:So I hope you find some value in this today as I just share a little bit about what's going on currently in my life and what's bringing me joy at this moment in my life, and seek those things out and just make a point to be present and enjoy those moments that that bring you joy and that's always what I'm striving to do and I hope that you are as well, and that's also something that I share with sharing this podcast is doing things that that bring, bring us joy and that can lead us into a healthy, happy and vibrant life, and that's what it's all about.
Speaker 1:So, with that being said, I hope that you are taking time for yourself on this day and doing something for your wellness, and have a beautiful, blessed rest of your day, and I will see you next time on Words of Wellness. Take care everybody. Thank you so much for tuning into today's episode.
